A Family Affair

Welcome back Honors Blue Hens! I have been looking forward to the start of this new school year since I moved out of Russell in May. While I have only been a sophomore for one full day of class, I know it will be a great year, although it has a lot to live up to since my freshman year was absolutely life changing.  Seeing all of the new freshmen reminds me of how excited I was this time last year and how that excitement has only grown exponentially since.  It also makes me look back and wonder why I ever was thinking about going anywhere other than the University of Delaware. Now that I am starting my second full year here, I honestly can’t picture myself at any other school.

The four Tattersall Blue Hens celebrating another UD graduation!

How did I get here, you may be asking? Well, that story starts all the way back to the time when I was just a tiny fourth grader.  My oldest sister was in the midst of college acceptances and weighing the pros and cons of the choices.

Ultimately, the school she chose was UD, which I was extremely excited about since that meant my biggest sister would only be 20 minutes from home! Moving her into her room in Russell B1 later that year, all I remember was being extremely hot, but, as cheesy as it sounds, I remember thinking there was also something magical about this place, and was so excited for my sister.

Fast forward to later that year when my next sister was applying to colleges. She was so certain UD was for her that she only applied here! Thankfully, she got in! So, we ended up moving her into Russell too that next year and again, I was extremely hot. But, I couldn’t put my finger on what was so special about UD.

Five years later, my next sister was in the college decision process and guess what school was at the top of her list? That’s right…UD. Honestly, I was quite surprised that she decided to go here because of how different her major was from the other two sisters.  But, as we moved the third Tatt into Russell, I realized again the special quality UD had about it and how it ended up being the perfect fit for her.

Three years later, it was my turn to go through the college decision process and I was a wreck. I was so stressed about where to go! Do I follow in my sisters’ footsteps and choose UD? Or do I create my own path and go to a new school? Obviously, I decided to go to UD.  But, how did I come about that decision? When it came down to it, I kept comparing other schools I was visiting to UD because that was all I had ever known.  Each other school I looked at was lacking something that I couldn’t explain. Then, I stepped on UD’s campus and that gut feeling inside me told me this is where I belonged. Ultimately, I ended up finding out that special quality I noticed all those years ago.  There is just something about the campus that makes me feel comfortable and at home.  Because I feel comfortable, it allows me to thrive and be myself. But, because UD has such a vast array of majors, clubs, and activities for each student, every person has the ability to thrive and succeed and make these four years the best of their lives.

When it came time for me to move into Russell, even after that first day on campus, I just knew I made the right decision to follow my family and choose UD. Every day after that has just reinforced that the decision to continue to make UD a family affair was easily the best decision I have made to date, as is the case for the past, present, and future Blue Hens!

Good luck this semester!

Here’s to Never Growing Up

In my lifetime, I have been to such places as Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., New York City, London, and Paris.  However, the top destination for me will always be the “Happiest Place on Earth.”  That’s right; I’m talking about Walt Disney World!  While I do enjoy the beach getaways every now and then, Disney is really the only vacation for my family.  You could say we are just a tad bit obsessed. Personally, this past vacation was my tenth trip, but some members of my family have been over 15 times! As you can probably infer, when the Tattersalls go to Disney, they go hard. This time was no exception.

From matching tanks to character breakfasts, from speed-walking to our favorite rides at the park’s opening, to dancing through EPCOT’s World Showcase at the end of “Illuminations” at night, it was as if this was our first time in Disney World. But, it wasn’t our first rodeo and we certainly were able to fit in our favorite rides (each one multiple times, too) and hit some of the best restaurants in the parks. We even stayed in the Magic Kingdom for almost 16 hours straight! I personally was second in line for Space Mountain when the ride opened that morning (Yet I had to let everyone ahead of me as I waited for my slowpoke family members to catch up with me). And while we were in the parks for just about four days, we definitely made the most of those four days to make this one of the most memorable Disney vacations.

One of the reasons I love Disney is that for the days you are there, you honestly have no other worries in the world besides what FastPass you should get next or what’s the easiest way to get from MGM Studios to anyplace the monorail stops just so you can hear, “Please stand clear of the doors… Por favor manténgase alejado de las puertas.”

Another reason is that no matter how old you are, you always feel like a kid again when you’re in Disney.  Ask anyone who has been and they will tell you that once you walk down Main Street USA and lay eyes on Cinderella’s Castle with the statue of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse in front of it, you are instantly transported back to your childhood sitting on your couch watching Disney movies with your sisters.  Or when you are in line for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, you still get just the slightest bit of nervousness each time you see one of the “super stretch” limos speeding off to the Aerosmith Concert. Or when you’re watching Wishes at the end of the night and hear Jiminy Cricket’s voice singing “When You Wish Upon A Star”, you definitely tear up (as my family and I did) just thinking about a memory from your past.

Ending the night in the Magic Kingdom the right way!

And then just as quickly as the trip goes, you are thrust back into reality with dreams of returning to Disney World in the very near future, which is the stage I am in right now.  With hilarious new memories and remembering the old one, I look forward to the next time my family and I return to the “Happiest Place of Earth.” But until we do, I don’t mind starting to get ready to return to (in my opinion) the Second Happiest Place on Earth in a few weeks: UD!

“Here’s To The Good Times”

Coming into this summer had me pretty anxious and worried. Anxious because I had just had one of the best school years of my life and all of those amazing friends I made live hours away. And worried because nothing was ever going to top my family vacation I took last year to Paris.  However, if at this moment I had to describe my summer so far in just one word, I would have to say it has been rather “musical” to say the least!

Why has it been musical you may ask? While my Netflix queue does have a lot of my favorite musicals, that has nothing to do with it.

One of the many reasons why I love living in Delaware is its close proximity to Philadelphia, meaning I have the advantage to see many of my favorite artists and bands in concert when they come to town.  So far this summer, I have already seen country singers Luke Bryan with Florida Georgia Line, Glee star Darren Criss, and a little boy band you may know of called One Direction.  I may have been one of the oldest audience members at One Direction, but I am not ashamed; they put on such an enjoyable show and I had an amazing night.  However, my favorite of the three has to be Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line. All three shows were fantastic and they made me very excited to find out who will be coming for SCPAB’s fall concert this year!

My summer was also quite musical due to my summer internship as well.  Thanks to taking advantage of some networking opportunities earlier in the year, this summer I have been interning with the Delmarva Broadcasting Company with their radio station 93.7 WSTW and their morning show “The Wakeup Crew.” While it does require me to wake up at 3:45AM each morning I work, listening to some of my favorite songs the entire day helps make up for it.  Besides listening to the new songs from Macklemore and Justin Timberlake, I do much more, such as helping run the show’s social media pages, recording and editing commercials, and going out to interview our listeners occasionally.  And, as nerve-wracking as it was the fire time, I have been on-air from time to time!  Whatever I have done, it has all been a blast so far and I have enjoyed every second of it! From being forced to hula-hoop in front of the Concord Mall, to interviewing Justin Bieber’s mom, I have learned so much about a field I had little experience in.  While my time as an intern is ending very soon, I will definitely look back on this internship as the beginning of a hopeful career in the media industry.

Although my musical summer has been fantastic thus far, it is going by fairly quickly. But I have to say; I can’t wait to be back on campus for my sophomore year! It will be here before we know it!

Happy Hunger Games! (Or Finals Season)

It’s the time of the year again! With just about two more weeks of classes, finals are quickly approaching. Unfortunately.  But, we just have to keep reminding ourselves that after all the stress and anxiety summer will be here, (Insert High School Musical 2 reference here)!

However, there is still much to be done before we can all go our separate ways and leave Newark behind for three months.  If you are like me, you still have plenty of work still left to do.  For some reason though, I am finding it so hard to concentrate on studying these past few days (senioritis a little early?).  Maybe it’s because my friends at other schools are posting on social media how they are done already.  Or maybe it’s because the weather is getting somewhat decent.  No matter the reason, with finals coming fast, I have been in dire need of some new places to study.

So, as I was walking around campus the past few days, I made sure to keep an eye out for a new, maybe abstract place I can call my new study spot, especially now that it’s nice enough to sit outside.  And, being as I am a super considerate person, I will divulge a few of my favorites:

1.     Old College Benches- I don’t know why, but Old College is one of my favorite places to go because it seems so calm all of the time.  Even though it is right on Main Street, once I pass through the brick entrance, I feel a sense of quietness that really helps me to focus and study.  Plus, the beautiful scenery makes for an excellent photo-op to Instagram!

2.     Umbrella Areas- Outside Trabant, Perkins and the Library, there are tables with umbrellas that provide the perfect outside study space.  Not only do you have an entire table where you can spread out all of your materials, but the umbrella also provides the perfect amount of shade so you can use your laptop and not have to worry about the annoying glare from the sun on your screen.

3.     Third Floor of the Library- Before this semester, I was afraid of going above the second level of the library in fear I would somehow be too loud.  However, my roommate Allie swears by it. So, I joined her one day and fell in love. I get so much work done when I go there. It’s the perfect place to go when you just want quiet and no one to bother you.  Plus, the library is pretty much a freezer, which is always very much appreciated now that the temperatures are higher outside and consequently in residence halls like Russell.

While I will not give away my number one favorite spot to study, I hope you enjoy these gems!  What are some of your favorite study spots on campus? Take advantage of them these last few weeks, and hopefully they help you get that extra push and end the semester on a high note!

Good luck on finals, Blue Hens! And may the odds be ever in our favor!

Let’s Give Our Eyes A Break: A Reflection on the Boston Marathon Bombings

This week, 186 South College is participating in Honors Blog Week 2013! Along with other Honors Blogs around the nation, we are focusing on the theme “Dare to Think Bigger.”

Going along with this message, it brings me to what has happened in our world this past week with the bombings in Boston.  I dare to think bigger, along with the rest of the country, in reflecting on these events by trying to make sense of this and in trying to find answers to the multitude of questions we are left with.

Ever since the devastating news broke about the events that occurred during the Boston Marathon on Monday, I’ve been glued to my TV and computer screen to find out more.  Maybe it is the communication major in me, but I felt it was my duty to read about it and constantly check the news, my Twitter feed, and the web for more information every few moments.  Regardless of how absolutely devastating the stories and images were, I still felt I had to keep looking to know more.

But, I couldn’t help but ask myself: “Why?”  Why did I want to keep looking up new information and photos when they all were just getting sadder and more horrifying?  Why did I feel the need to know every single minute detail of such a sickening event?  Why do we as social beings feel the desire to look up and read about such a terrible incident?

As we discussed in my COMM245 class over the course of last week, we have a drive for such graphic images; we simply cannot help ourselves.  It’s like a cycle that will never end; the media will keep giving into our vicious instincts by providing such details of the violent events that occur in our lives.  However, as Boston-bred actress Amy Poehler suggests in her video response, our eyes need a break. “It’s okay to not be looking at what everyone else is looking at all the time, to know what you’re ready to see and not to see and to be okay with letting some things rest in peace,” Poehler states.  (To watch the entire video, click here)

We have to realize that as much as we read stories and look at pictures and watch the news we may never fully understand why this all happened.  As unfortunate as it may seem, bad things happen to innocent people a lot of the time, and it is absolutely unacceptable and contributes to why our world is so messed up these days.  I find it unbearable to think of Martin Richard, Krystle Campbell, Lingzi Lu, and Officer Sean Collier never being able to see their friends and family again because of this.  In the coming weeks, as the world tries to make sense of the events, we must learn from what happened to help influence the future so that something of this nature does not affect us again.  Instead of trying to decode the why, we should reflect on the who: both who we lost and who helped save and protect the almost 200 victims.  In doing so, we can be reinvigorated with a sense of hope for the future, as the goodness exhibited helps to revive the nation.

As always, feel free to comment with your own personal reflections or rants as I just did. You’ll be surprised at how relieved you will feel to just let out what you’re thinking.  Remember, Dare to Think Bigger. Also, be sure to read (and comment on) our partner in crime Temple’s posting today! Check them out at http://www.honorslounge.com/.
