The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

It seems like just yesterday I moved into my new room in James Smith in my JCrew shorts and tank, basking in the beauty of the blasting air conditioner, a far cry from move-in day in Russell freshman year.  Fast-forward a few months and instead of my AC in the 60s, the temperature outside has far surpassed that and now resides in the 40s and 50s on a regular basis.  There is even snow in Newark’s forecast this week!  In addition, previews for Disney’s new animated feature Frozen are popping up all over my TV, while peppermint hot chocolate is now available at the Starbucks in Smith, and twinkle lights are starting to be strung around Main Street. You know what this means… the holidays are upon us!  And if you are anything like me, you could not be more excited; it’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Granted, Halloween was only 13 days ago, and we have yet to celebrate Thanksgiving.  However, I can’t help myself; I just want it to be the holidays already! It is such a magical time of the year. I swear the general public is a lot happier during the season. How could it not be? The holidays encourage us to show love and give thanks for all of the people in our lives and to showcase our ideals and beliefs. Plus, we get to eat lots of cookies and watch movies where there is always a happy ending, which is why I love watching them so much! Either the two leads fall in love and kiss under the mistletoe, or the Grinch-like characters start to believe in the spirit of the holidays. Regardless, they are such feel-good movies, just like the entire season itself.

However, I have found that while some people (myself included), are beyond excited for the holiday season, there are some people getting frustrated that the holidays are creeping up on us, just like those Grinch characters in some of those beloved movies. My Twitter feed is a jumble of confusion! Some of my followers embrace the spirit, through watching the Hallmark Channel’s “Countdown to Christmas” or listening to their favorite carols, while some have even put up their trees! Yet, there are those few Scrooges that say it is too early for such antics and that people should not start celebrating until after Thanksgiving. They are almost offended and extremely angry that people are in the holiday spirit! How can anyone be angry that it is almost the holidays?!

To those people that say it is too early to be celebrating: why do you care so much?  So what if people get excited for this time of the year and want to rush it as soon as possible? The holidays provide a sense of hope for people to believe that regardless of what may seem impossible, everything will be okay in the end.  So, as one of my followers, Carrie Kirk, said on Twitter, “If it makes you happy, begin to celebrate whenever you want,” (@kirk_carrie).  Tis the season, Blue Hens!

#UDHC

It is no secret that I am in love with my school. I absolutely love it here, as you can probably tell from my past posts. So since this past weekend was Homecoming, I absolutely loved seeing all of the UD spirit come out all across campus from my fellow classmates and returning alumni.  The University provided so many fun, celebratory events throughout the whole week and I love that everyone just got swept up in all of the festivities to celebrate how amazing the University of Delaware truly is.

The UD Football team getting the fans pumped at the Homecoming Pep Rally

One of the highlights of Homecoming weekend for me was the Pep Rally on Friday afternoon.  I originally had to go for another commitment as a Social Media Ambassador with the University’s Office of Communication and Marketing (OCM) to promote the use of the official Homecoming hashtag #UDHC, but I ended up loving every minute I was there. It almost brought me back to my high school pep rallies, which I loved because everyone was so spirited and so excited to root for our school.  While the Pep Rally was originally supposed to be on the Laird turf, due to the weather, it was moved into the newly renovated Little Bob.  With henna tattoos, a photo booth and caricature artists, it felt like UD’s own carnival inside the Little Bob!  The festivities continued with DJ and music numbers by some members of our talented student body, as well as performances by our own dance team, cheerleading squad and mascot team. including the newest addition to the mascot team: Air yoUDee, a blow-up version of our beloved Blue Hen!  The varsity sports team then took to the stage for recognition, and played target practice with the hundreds of students gathered by hurdling free UD swag out into the audience.  In addition to those free spirit towels and frisbees, each student who attended the Pep Rally left with a special UD Homecoming 2013 T-shirt!  Definitely worth the walk to and from the Little Bob in the rain, if you ask me!

Hannah got her friend who was visiting to wear UD colors all day!

Another highlight from the Homecoming festivities was getting to see so many new and old faces on campus.  My sister, Hillary, graduated from UD in May, as did many of her friends, who I also became friends with over the course of the year through the Blue Hen Ambassador program, the Honors Program, and my other activities I am a part of.  So, it was so nice seeing them all back on campus again; it made me realize how much I missed having my sister on campus, not to mention so many of her friends who are equally as amazing and fun as she is!  In addition to running into so many members of the Class of 2013, my friend from high school came down on Saturday to visit and spend the day with me.  She has visited before, but it was so nice getting to show her just how spirited and special the University of Delaware can be, while inconspicuously trying to convince her to transfer from her own school (since UD is obviously the only school anyone should ever go to).  My friend absolutely loved her time here, from laying out on the Laird Campus turf, to celebrating Homecoming in blue and gold on the way to the football game, to walking down Main Street to grab Central Perk in the morning. It is hard for someone not to enjoy a day on campus! She can’t wait to return!

Obviously, I had a fantastic weekend and I hope everyone, from alums to current students had a happy, safe, and enjoyable Homecoming Weekend!

That Other Building on South College

This semester, while staying as involved as I can at 186 South College (the Honors Program, obviously), I have also increased my involvement with 210 South College, aka the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and absolutely love it.  As I have said before, I am a Blue Hen Ambassador with Admissions, meaning I give tours to prospective students and their families.  On top of that, BHAs are also given the opportunity to work in the office, through answering and maintaining Admissions phones, emails, chats, etc., and I finally took advantage of this opportunity and decided to start this semester.

I absolutely love working in the office, not just because I am able to learn even more about this fine university, but also because I can get in contact prospective families and help them see just why the University of Delaware is so great.  It is one thing to give them a tour and tell them all there is to know about UD and all the history and information, but it is another thing to help them along the way during the application process.  As I quickly began to realize early on this semester, working in Admissions is no easy task; there is always something changing about our application process, and with the addition of many new admissions officers, the office is changing a lot, too, and I am excited to be able to experience this firsthand.

This past week, the office was teeming with new prospects, and not just new prospective students to the University of Delaware, but new prospective BHAs, as our pool for new tour guides was interviewing all last week.  Fortunately, I was on the Selection Committee and helped interview the BHA applicants for the position, which I absolutely loved.  I’ll admit it: I can be a somewhat judgmental person at times, so this committee was right up my ally!  In conducting many interviews, I realized just how lucky I am to show my love for my school through this program.  As such, I want to make sure these applicants are exactly the same way.  So, I always tried to get them to tell me their favorite thing about UD.  The vast array of answers made me realize again just how great of a school we go to because every applicant had such a different answer; there are just so many great things about UD!

Clearly, working in Admissions has definitely been such a great experience so far.  Being able to showcase my love for my school makes me love UD even more each day.  I can’t wait to welcome the new BHAs in just a few short days! Although I will miss being the “newbie” class, I can’t wait to be a part of a new class’ experience and help the newbies see just how awesome being in the Admissions Office is and how it helps you love UD even more! If you can, I would highly suggest applying to be a BHA or to work in the Admissions Office in some other way at least for part of your UD career; you will not regret it!

Who Wants to Rush Oozma Kappa?

In light of recent events surrounding the UD campus life, many people have been asking me what I like to do to spend my time on the weekends.   To be honest, I personally have a wide range of interest of things I like to do.  From going to see plays, to grabbing dinner on Main Street, I try to spend my weekends with not just my books studying for my classes next week, but instead I choose to have some fun with my friends and see what is going on around campus.

As if you didn’t already know, many RSOs have different events on the weekends for students to go out and partake in.  However, my favorite RSO that is a pro at putting on weekend activities is SCPAB: the Student Centers Programming Advisory Board.  They are the people that are bringing everyone’s favorite red-headed singer, Ed Sheeran, to the Bob this Wednesday, and made my dreams come true by letting me meet the amazing Harry Shum, Jr. from Glee last semester.  Besides this, SCPAB is also in charge of showing films in the Trabant Theater every Wednesday and every weekend.

Each semester they also try to put on an outdoor movie event on the North Green, which just so happened to have been on September 13.  The movie shown was Monsters University, the prequel to Monsters, Inc. and one of my favorite new movies.  So, when I saw that it was playing this weekend I was so excited to go and begged my roommates to come see it with me even more when I found out it was being played outside under the stars!  I assumed there was going to be somewhat of a crowd, but the actual turnout was unlike anything I had ever seen.  At one point during the movie, I turned around to see and the green was packed.  It looked like one of the pictures from the Freshman Twilight Induction Ceremony where the green was swarmed with all of the freshmen.  The place was just a sea of blankets, people and popcorn!

Regardless of what had happened around campus earlier in the week, by Friday night, a vast majority of the school had gathered outside to watch and laugh along to a Disney movie. It almost makes me wish UD offered an Oozma Kappa fraternity, the one Mike and Sully must join to compete in the Scare Games in the film, where watching Disney movies was the only requirement! Yet, it still made me super proud and excited that even though part of our student body image may have been tainted a bit, it showed me that many of us still love to bring out our inner child, especially when Disney is concerned.

Hopefully, something similar to this can happen every weekend with the SCPAB Film Series. I know I can’t wait to see Despicable Me 2 when it comes on October 4th and 5th.  Who knows? Maybe a similar experience to Monsters University will result, too!

Always Go For the Gummy Bears

The beginning of every semester is always extremely overwhelming.  After going through it twice before, I am again finding myself dazed about the entire semester. I find myself looking back at my first semester last year a lot and how I was just so confused about what the best routes were to take to get to class, what days I should go to Greens to Go in Trabant versus what days I should go to the panini stand in the Scrounge, or even who is free for lunch when I am! It all just got so complicated! However, looking back on my first semester of freshman year in the Honors Program, I don’t think I could have done it any better.  So, I decided I shouldn’t keep my secrets to myself and instead I am here to share are my quick tips on how to make your first semester one of the best ones you will ever have:

  1. Stay on top of your schoolwork! For most of us, college is the first time we are away from home for an extensive amount of time, and therefore it is the first time we are given such a luxurious amount of free time.  Don’t waste it! We are all in the Honors Program because we had a great work ethic in high school, so don’t slack off now! Schoolwork can get away from you super easily. Explore campus and find a favorite place to study. My favorite place was the Quiet Study Lounge in my residence hall. Perfect atmosphere to study, but also to be social when you are ready for a nice break now and again.
  2. Go to Dr. Munson’s Study Breaks! Dr. Munson has pretty much been the face of the UD Honors Program for decades now and he so generously brings snacks to the Honors lounges every Wednesday. Getting free food, talking with an adorable elderly man, and meeting new friends in your hall – what more could you ask for? Some of my favorite memories last year were at Dr. Munson’s Study Breaks. The gummy bears are a must!
  3. Get involved! Activities Night has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still join one of UD’s 300 RSOs! Clubs are some of the best ways to meet friends beyond the ones in your classes and halls, and you’ll connect with people even better because you’ll already have a similar interest. My suggestion: Blue Hen Ambassadors.  The campus tour guides are some the best students on campus, which is an obvious bias statement given the fact that I am one of the lucky members.  However, if you are energetic, obsessed with the University and like to have fun in a cool UD polo and name-tag, then check out the Blue Hen Ambassadors Facebook page for more info and the application! Applications are due at 5:00 pm on September 12, 2013!

While I could go on and on with tips about how the make your freshman experience the best, it all really comes down to doing what makes you happy and the most comfortable! I wish you all the best of luck!
