As the fall semester gets even closer to ending, it reminds me just how short my time left here at the University of Delaware is. It feels like just yesterday that I was a freshman walking into the Honors dorm, ready to begin a new chapter of my life. Now, I’m applying to internships, full-time jobs, and figuring out what direction I want my life to go in. However, while time feels faster than ever, I want to take the time to remember my past four years at UD and enjoy my last one. Our school lives continue to become intertwined with our lives at home, especially over the past year or so. This manifests itself in many ways: sitting at dinner only to get a dreaded Canvas notification that your test was graded, a random email from your professor on a weekend evening where you thought you might be able to relax, and the amount of distractions present on our phones and computers while in a virtual class or doing schoolwork online. This last one is a real struggle for me, even while writing this article! Something I’ve found that helps me a bit, however, is doing my work physically outside of the house! Obviously, this hasn’t really been too much of a possibility during the pandemic (and even now, some may still feel uncomfortable, and that’s okay), but I’ve found that being in a public place helps me focus more on my work than if I’m alone in my room. In a way, the presence of other people holds me accountable. With all that said, here are some nice places around campus for working or studying away from your room.
With the elongated winter break, I took up a new hobby. For quite some time now, I’ve wanted a new car. There’s nothing wrong with Sasha, my 1995 Chevrolet, black Corsica, but technically, she’s not mine. The car is under my sister’s name, and I just pay her the car insurance. Now, though, I think it’s time to start looking for something new to help me save up.
I started looking at DoorDash when the pandemic began way back when. I had heard by word of mouth that it pays superbly well, and that people love the job. Once my parents pulled me from working at the retirement home in March, I didn’t have a job for a while. Though I was looking for other opportunities, it was a challenge to find suitable jobs for a minor since I was only 17 at the time. When I researched DoorDash, I saw that it, too, didn’t allow underaged workers. With that, I set it to the back burner for the time being. Continue reading
These are unprecedented times with loads of uncertainty, whether that be with grades, work, relationships, or home life. Everything has been up in the air. If you’re like me, you’ve been feeling “bleh” a lot recently, mostly from our situations right now. Like many others, online schooling has taken a toll on my mental health, so finding the positives in this trying time has been super important. With midterms over and many of us beginning final projects, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and lose motivation from working so hard, especially as Honors students. Here are some of my tips on how to not feel so stressed and bring back your energy to end the semester strongly!
Make a yummy treat for yourself.
There’s nothing like treating yourself after studying for a hard exam or writing an essay. My roommates and I have been trying to find the best comfort food, and our recent favorite has been buffalo chicken dip. As soon as it comes out of the oven, it’s gone in an instant. Here’s the recipe we’ve been making if you want to give it a try yourself!
Ingredients: Two 8 oz cream cheese packages (softened), ¾ cup of Frank’s RedHot buffalo wing sauce, 1 cup of ranch, 2 cups of shredded cooked chicken, 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
- Preheat oven to 350℉.
- Stir together cream cheese and buffalo sauce (make sure it’s well blended).
- Add in ranch dressing, chicken, and cheese; then mix.
- Pour into a baking dish.
- Add an extra layer of cheese on the top.
- Put in the oven for 30 minutes.
- Done! Eat with your favorite kind of dipper (tortilla chips, vegetables, anything you want)!
