Here at the University of Delaware English Language Institute, we offer customized programs for international professionals, university and high school students with concentrations in business, law, food and nutrition, health, education, government, E-gaming, science and technology-to name a few.
Every special program includes hands-on practice; interaction and networking with professionals, students and academics in respective fields; field related/specific and cultural excursions; cultural exchange and language practice in relaxed settings through home hospitality, community events and peer mentoring.
Nutrition
Topics in food, nutrition and health. Observe UD classes, interact with UD students and professors in related fields. Visit commercial and non-profit food establishments such as the Food Bank of Delaware, some of UD’s many dining facilities and Newark Natural Foods. Explore the Edible Forest Garden on the UD children’s campus: a hands-on, cross-disciplinary program focused on nutrition, sustainability and environmental learning.
STEM
Technical communication focus combined with demonstrations and hands-on practice in laboratories and makerspaces across campus. Explore ground-breaking research projects at UD’s Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus!
Teacher Training
Intensive certificate program designed to meet the specific needs of EFL teachers, supervisors, or teacher trainers by providing seminars, workshops, class observations, practica, and training in current methods, approaches, and techniques. Teacher traning programs also include developmental coursework in written and spoken English, as needed.
Short-term programs for high school students
Experience the adventure of a lifetime! Immerse yourself in American culture every day through special classes, adventures, trips, activities customized just for you. Cultural activities include excursions to regional tourist attractions, Washington, D.C., New York City, hikes, picnics, and concerts.
Test Prep
This course will develop skills and strategies in those areas critical to success on your exam. Students will practice with language samples similar to those on the actual exam and take practice tests.

American Law and Legal English (ALLEI)
Training in the American legal system and legal English for international legal professionals.
Much of U.S. corporate litigation takes place in Delaware, and the Delaware Bar Association includes some of the most highly regarded attorneys and judges in the United States.
The four week ALLEI program includes 120 hours of instructional and professional activities, including courses, seminars, legal visitations and cultural activities.
Language Development
Build your confidence! Improve your speaking skills, your pronunciation and your understanding of native and non-native speakers of English. Become a more effective writer.
Sports/Health
Practice your language skills in an interactive and fun environment, learning the many American sports related idioms while exploring topics in health behavior and sports education.
Attend professional sports games depending on the season as well as University games. Experience the American custom of ‘tailgating.’
Meet UD Health Sciences students and professors engaged in ground-breaking research projects at UD’s Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus!
Government
Practice professional communication and presentation skills for meetings and networking. Visit local and state government offices and agencies. Observe the Delaware legislature in session with possible official recognition by Speaker of the House.
Business
3-4 week project based course focuses on business case studies; entrepreneurship or organizational management; practice negotiation, networking and presentation skills.
Perfect the elevator pitch and ace that interview for your dream job! Learn to make small-talk, an essential skill in business meetings, or lunch and dinner engagements.
Childhood Development
Practice your language skills in the morning and engage on and off campus in the afternoon! Visit research labs engaged in groundbreaking research on early childhood language acquisition, engage with teachers and children at UD’s Lab school—a premiere training site for future educators. Observe and discuss instruction in the Early Learning Center and experience the Children’s Edible Forest Garden—an outdoor learning space focused on environmental learning, sustainability and nutrition.
Trading Course
Learn to trade like a New York stock broker!
UD’s Geltzeiler Trading Center comes fully equipped with real-time feeds to two stock tickers for hands-on training in market structures and Bloomberg Terminal usage.
Limited Intensive English Program
The Limited IEP comprises 2 courses – Reading/Writing and Listening/Speaking – with no tutoring. This totals approximately 18 hours/week of instruction.
