The only visit to the University of Delaware by a sitting president came on June 11, 1923, when Warren G. Harding stopped at the campus of the Women’s College before the commencement ceremony. Harding was traveling by motorcade from Washington and stopped in Newark for a short visit. He spoke briefly to students, faculty, trustees and Newark residents from the steps of Warner Hall. Harding’s visit was arranged at the last minute, thus he did not give the official commencement address.
