The University of Delaware’s political involvement at the state level remains strong. January 2009 saw not only a Delawarean being sworn in as Vice President of the United States, but also the first Delaware gubernatorial inauguration to be held at the university. Shortly after midnight on January 20th, Governor Jack Markell was sworn in at a ceremony in Mitchell Hall. The early hour allowed Delawareans to travel to Washington later that morning for the presidential inauguration. Markell long has had ties with the University of Delaware; his late father, William Markell, was Arthur Andersen Alumni Professor Emeritus of Accounting, and the family lived in Newark for many years.
