The 41st President of the United States, George H. W. Bush, visited the University of Delaware in 1983, during his first term as vice president under Ronald Reagan. Bush came to campus to receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree on November 5, 1983 as part of the Founder’s Day ceremonies. Founder’s Day commemorated the founding of Francis Alison’s New London Academy. Bush was escorted from the New Castle Air National Guard Base to Clayton Hall, where he addressed a crowd of over 700 attendees.
