Student experience at the University of Delaware has not been limited to the Newark campus. Study abroad was created at the University of Delaware. In 1923, the first group of eight students enrolled in the Junior Year Abroad, or Foreign Study Plan, departed for France with Professor Raymond Kirkbride. Kirkbride created this program of intensive language exposure and study at a foreign university and led larger groups of students on their year-long trips until his death in 1929. The program flourished, to be copied by universities and colleges throughout the nation. Today, Delaware offers more than 80 study abroad programs.
