The number of fraternities increased from the 1950s through the 1980s as some organizations left campus and new chapters were founded at Delaware. Sororities entered campus life in the 1970s, with two chapters founded in 1972: Alpha Sigma Alpha in the spring and then Alpha Phi in the fall. Thousands of UD students hold their pledge periods, with all the traditions that joining fraternity or sorority involved, as treasured memories of Blue Hen life. Currently, over 40 fraternity and sorority chapters continue this tradition at the University of Delaware.
