1966 Freshman Beanie

University of Delaware Archives and Records Management

The treatment that our freshmen received was not unique. Many colleges and universities had some form of freshman hazing, and first-year students throughout the country found themselves wearing beanies. Both male and female UD students wore freshman beanies and underwent the “rat rules” until the late 1960s. As social customs and expectations changed, freshman hazing became unpopular and gradually died out.
