Trustees of the Academy also sought support for their school from areas further afield, hoping to gain support from wealthy Presbyterians. In 1772, Dr. Hugh Williamson, a minister, spent a year traveling in Jamaica, visiting planters and raising a significant sum for the Academy of Newark.
