High-quality online programs

With over 40 years of experience delivering high-quality intensive English program, the University of Delaware English Language Institute (ELI) now offers a variety of small, online English courses. Many of our core programs are also available online.

Expert Instruction

Courses are designed and taught by experienced faculty with master’s and, in some cases, doctoral degrees. They have enriched the field of ESL through their research, publications and instructional innovation and have authored textbooks that break new
ground in the field.

Access to faculty

All programs include meetings by Zoom with ELI faculty or advisors, and participants are supported throughout their courses by other methods, including email, chat, video calls, and discussions boards.

Engaging technology

ELI faculty are trained to use the latest educational technology, and our primary platforms are supported by UD and ELI technology specialists. Asynchronous learning is highly engaging, including interactive videos, collaborative brainstorming, annotated readings, and discussion boards.

Most online programs include live, online classes via Zoom. You will need access to a laptop capable of running Zoom and a stable internet connection.

Personal and Professional Development Programs

Choose one of our personal and professional development programs to improve your English for specific purposes – business, public service, or the pursuit of graduate education in the U.S. These courses provide a way to practice your English in a supportive, fun setting!

Business Communication

Analyze real business scenarios, build your language skills, and engage in real life communication activities.
Business Communication is an instructor-led online course delivered in real time. The course helps business professionals practice the English for networking, negotiating, running meetings, and improve their discussion and presentation skills, listening proficiency, oral intelligibility, vocabulary, and grammar. The instructor will work with you to identify specific areas for improvement and offer tools, activities, and individualized feedback.

Delaware EFL Teacher Training

DEFT Online expands the reach of our program: until you can come to Delaware, we’re ready to bring the University of Delaware to you!
The English Language Institute’s Delaware EFL Teacher Training (DEFT) program draws from a rich, 40-plus-year history of training teachers from around the world to use the latest techniques and methodologies in teaching English as a second or foreign language.

Courses for Graduate Students

These courses, designed specifically for international graduate school applicants, help you through the application process for professional and academic programs at the master’s and doctoral level.

GRE/GMAT Preparation for International Students

Prepare to take the GRE or GMAT as an international student.
Take the fear out of the GRE and the GMAT! Our GRE/GMAT Prep course provides strategies for tackling the verbal and essay sections of the tests, with special emphasis on the challenges that international students face.

Applying to U.S. Graduate Schools

Get the help you need to apply to graduate schools in the U.S.
This fully self-paced asynchronous course allows you to start any time. In addition to step-by-step modules that walk you through the graduate school selection and application process with a special focus on international students, participants will have three one-on-one conferences with ELI advisors. You can choose how to use your one-on-one time: ask for help with choosing schools, preparing materials, or writing your personal statement.

Many of our core programs are also available wholly online or as a pathway to Newark. That is, start your journey online until you can join us on our beautiful Newark campus.

Intensive English Program

Thousands of students and professionals from around the world have studied in the Intensive English Program (IEP). Known for its innovative course offerings, IEP helps participants to develop their English for professional settings and improve their knowledge of U.S. culture.

Graduate Conditional Admissions Program

Through the Graduate Conditional Admissions Program (Grad CAP), excellent students can be accepted to University of Delaware graduate programs and our partner colleges and universities. No TOEFL score is required!

Academic Transitions

Academic Transitions (AT) is the University of Delaware’s pathway program for conditionally-admitted undergraduate students. If you have an excellent academic background, you can be conditionally accepted to a UD undergraduate program even if you need to improve your English before starting full-time university studies!
