Last week of advice for the summer

This is our last piece of advice from UNIV117 students for the summer. Next week we will start featuring our 2024-2025 UST Peer Liaisons on the blog and Instagram. Make sure you follow us @ust_at_ud

“To incoming undeclared students, I would advise them to explore various subjects, engage with peers and professors, and take advantage of resources to gain clarity and direction in their academic and career pursuits.”

Don’t Rush!

Every Thursday during the summer (sometimes earlier or later) we will offer some words of advice, wisdom, and encouragement from Spring 2024 UNIV117 (Exploring Your Academic Path) students to new, incoming University Studies (UST) undeclared students.

“A piece of advice I would give to incoming undeclared students is to not rush the process; you’ll figure out what you want to do eventually. I would also recommend taking this class [UNIV117 (Exploring Your Academic Path)] because it has helped me a lot to narrow down what major I want to do.”

Chart Your Own Course

Every Thursday during the summer we will offer some words of advice, wisdom, and encouragement from Spring 2024 UNIV117 (Exploring Your Academic Path) students to new, incoming University Studies (UST) undeclared students.

“Although it is sometimes hard to remind myself, I have learned that there is no “perfect” timeline that you should be on. It’s easy to compare yourself to others who have a clear cut plan of what they want to do, but there are actually a lot of benefits to being undecided. I have found that being able to take a variety of classes has been very helpful in figuring out what I am interested in, and deciding what I definitely do not want to do. Majority of the time, your major does not define what your career may be, so it’s totally okay to take your time and discover your passions.”

Have you thought about a minor (or 2 or 3)?

Every Thursday during the summer we will offer some words of advice, wisdom, and encouragement from Spring 2024 UNIV117 (Exploring Your Academic Path) students to new, incoming University Studies (UST) undeclared students.

“Another piece of advice I would give is to look into minors that interest you and consider having a minor, double minor, or [double] major. As an overachiever, being in the communication major seemed so general and not enough variety, but looking at minors can spark interests and ideas.”

Advice One Day Earlier: Happy 4th of July!

Every Thursday during the summer we will offer some words of advice, wisdom, and encouragement from Spring 2024 UNIV117 (Exploring Your Academic Path) students to new, incoming University Studies (UST) undeclared students.

“Talk to your advisor because they are your best resource. When I started, all I thought about was how I had no clue what my major would be and what I wanted to do with my life.  I gradually started to get closer with my advisor and talk about what I really liked. Then, the day I met with her for class registration I declared my major.”
