Virtual Drop-in Schedule for the Week of December 20-23

There will be no in-person drop-ins this week, and UD offices will be closed on December 24 and the following week. There will be a new blog post for winter session drop-in times in January.

Drop-ins and Appointments

Welcome (back) students! We hope you had a wonderful summer.

Classes start on Tuesday, August 31. Please make sure that you are enrolled in a full schedule (full-time is at least 12 credits, but we recommend having around 15).

All UST advisors will be on drop-in appointments only during the first week from August 30 thru September 7. See the schedule below.

Monday, Aug 30: (no morning drop-ins) 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Tuesday, Aug 31: 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Wednesday, Sept 1: 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Thursday, Sept 2: 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Friday, Sept 3: 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Monday, Sept 6: Holiday (office closed, no drop-ins)
Tuesday, Sept 7: 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM

Drop-ins are quick meetings (15 minute max) and there could be a wait. We will have virtual and in-person options. We strongly encourage you to opt for a virtual meeting! Our building is small, and the waiting room is tiny and not at all optimal for social distancing. In this episode, we interview UD alumni and staff members Meg Hutchins, Lukas Emory, and John Cogan. They each share with us their career journeys (Meg’s was a bit long, so we are posting a separate bonus episode with that below), and we also discussed the importance of networking, Lukas’s book, John’s Geography major, Meg’s insight on what you can do with a History major, freelancing, and more!

Here is Meg’s career story unedited (it was mostly edited out of the episode to save for time). It’s a great story especially for those interested in history, museums, costuming, education, etc.

Withdrawal Deadline: Monday, May 3rd

The deadline to change the grading status of a course is Monday, May 3. On Friday, April 30 and Monday, May 3 all UST advisors will be on drop-in only! Stop by the drop-in zoom room (https://udel.zoom.us/j/93598341959) between 9:30-12 and 1-3:30 PM if you want to discuss your grading options for a course. We also have regular drop-in hours during the rest of the week (same zoom link).

Here are the different options for changing your grading status:

  • WITHDRAWAL
    • Similar to dropping a class, but it stays on your transcript with a grade of W.
    • Good option if you are struggling in a class you don’t necessarily need (e.g. a breadth requirement that can be satisfied with a different course).
  • PASS/FAIL
    • If you earn a passing grade, you will have a P that does not affect your GPA, and the credits count as a free elective but do not satisfy any requirements.
    • If you earn a failing grade, you will have an F that does affect your GPA.
    • Good option if you feel you can pass the class but don’t want a low grade to affect your GPA, and you don’t necessarily need the class (i.e. you won’t need to repeat it with standard grading).
    • You can only change one class per semester to pass/fail.
  • AUDIT
    • You attend the class but don’t have to do the assignments, don’t earn credits, and earn a grade of L (listener) which does not affect your GPA.
    • Good option if you are struggling in a class you will need to repeat.

There are more considerations to take into account when deciding what to do about a class, like if it will drop you below full-time status or affect your financial aid, scholarships, student visa, etc. Make sure to contact the appropriate office/department to find out how it will affect you before making any changes. When in doubt, contact your academic advisor.

Remember that midterm grades are not always an accurate reflection of how well you might be doing in a course. It is best to take into account what went into the midterm grade and how much it affects your final grade. If you have concerns about a course, speak with your professor and/or academic advisor to explore your options. If you are not able to change the grading status of a course you are not doing as well in as you hoped, we also recommend utilizing the various tutoring and academic support resources, which you can find on the Office of Academic Enrichment’s website.
