Helpful Hints for First-Year Students

¨ Attend classes regularly and focus on the material being covered when you are in class.

¨ Sit near the front of the classroom and make eye contact with the instructor.

¨ Read the syllabus carefully and note important dates (exams, assignments due, etc.) on your personal calendar.

¨ If you have questions about the material or an exam, attend the instructor’s or the teaching assistant’s office hours.

¨ Set aside adequate time to read, study, and complete your coursework. Hone your study skills by attending a free OAE workshop.

¨ If you have concerns, contact an advisor to discuss them.

In college, syllabi are very important tools for professors to communicate their expectations to students.  It is your responsibility as a student to carefully review the syllabus and ask your instructor questions if you do not understand something.

A syllabus is a document that outlines how a course is structured.  A well-developed syllabus contains all of the information a student needs to understand what being a member of the class entails.  This usually includes:

  • Instructor’s policies on attendance and grading
  • Course number and description
  • Required textbooks and other materials
  • Weekly schedule listing due dates for assignments and tests
  • Instructor’s name, email address, office location, and office hours

 

Some instructors distribute a paper copy of the syllabus during the first week of class, while others email it to the class or post it in Canvas. If you do not receive a syllabus, be sure to ask for one.

 

In the Know: First Year Experience (FYE) Program

The FYE Program is designed to get you off to a good start and to help you succeed at UD. FYE also allows you to meet other students in a small class setting, learn about resources at UD, and feel more at home on campus. All freshmen are required to participate in a First Year Seminar (FYS). Seminars are led by faculty who work closely with undergraduate peer mentors.

Helpful Hints: Language Placement at UD

Over half of the majors at UD require that students complete coursework in a language other than English. Placement in the appropriate level class is based on your previous experience with the language you choose to study. Students who are native speakers of languages other than English may take an exemption exam by contacting the placement coordinator.

 

In the Know: Course Registration

Students may make changes to their schedules through the WebReg system beginning Wednesday, August 1. Section numbers refer to the day, time, and location of a course. The section number appears after the course number: PSYC100-010 refers to General Psychology 100, section 010, which meets on M/W/F from 9:05-9:55 am in the Fall 2018 semester.  Some sections are offered online, including 194 and 195. Some are reserved for special populations – such as Honors 080, 081, etc.. Some sections are not available to most students because they meet in another part of the state (or even the world!) – such as 310, 510, 710, and 070.
