Research computing regularly schedules and coordinates GIS workshops with the UD Library, Delaware Geological Survey (DGS), Esri, etc for members of the UD community who wish to learn more about a particular aspect of GIS. If you have topics that you would like to be presented in the GIS Workshops series, submit your ideas to gis-info@udel.edu.

Basics of Geographic Information Systems (hybrid)

Jumpstart your understanding of geographic information systems (GIS), a powerful tool for mapping and analyzing spatial data, so that you can explain and display your data to a wider audience. During this workshop, learn the essential concepts of GIS, including layers, imaging and the types of software needed for GIS analysis. You will also be introduced to the Esri product stack and its licensing—including ArcGIS Pro, the desktop GIS software; and ArcGIS Online, the cloud GIS solution—and explore how it can support your research. Registration is required. There are 15 in-person seats available. There are 50 online seats available
Getting Started with ArcGIS Pro (in-person only)
Thu., September 26, 2:30–4:00PM, Pearson, Room 305
Meet ArcGIS Pro, the latest professional desktop geographic information systems (GIS) application from Esri. With this application, you can create 3D scenes to display, interact with and analyze your data in new ways. During this workshop, you will learn how to get started in ArcGIS Pro, symbolize and label data, perform simple queries, and create and share maps from your desktop with the assistance of instructors. Registration is required. There are 25 seats available.
Getting Started with ArcGIS Online (hybrid)
Thu., October 3, 2:30-4:00PM, Zoom/Morris Library, Room 200B
Your research tells a story. Learn how to use ArcGIS StoryMaps, a web-mapping application from Esri, to help fill in the details. Discover how GIS can support your research, and how the ArcGIS Online platform—a robust, user-friendly, web-based mapping tool—can help explain and analyze your data. During this workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to practice using Esri’s ArcGIS Online platform with the assistance of instructors. You’ll explore how to add data to an online map and display it in a web-mapping application that can be viewed on many platforms, including web browsers, desktop map viewers and mobile devices. Registration is required. There are 15 in-person seats available. There are 50 online seats available
Getting Started with ArcGIS Online Story Maps (hybrid)
Wed., October 10, 2:30-3:30PM, Zoom/Morris Library, Room 200B
ArcGIS Online is a powerful platform that enables you to create robust, user-friendly and interactive web-based maps to display your data online. Once you have created your online map, the question becomes: What is the best way to display it? During this workshop, learn about several popular Esri web-mapping applications, including Instant Apps, Dashboards, StoryMaps, Experience Builder, Field Maps, Survey123 and QuickCapture. You will discover how to present your content in a meaningful way and provide optimized web map interactivity to enhance user experience while also learning how to capture data quickly and efficiently in the field and share information with your office. There are 50 online seats available.

Esri e-Learning
The University of Delaware maintains a site license with Esri, the makers of ArcGIS. As part of this site license, UD faculty/staff/grant supported student that pay for an Esri license and any UD student may take any GIS technology classes at Esri e-Learning at no cost. These courses are a great way to get started with GIS or learn a new aspect of ArcGIS or even general GIS fundamentals. Send a request to askIT@udel.edu if you would like access to Esri e-learning. (If you are requesting for a UD course the email should include a list of UDel email addresses for all students in the class.)
