Community Service Committee (CSC):

  • Relay For Life: SAPA’s UD Relay for Life team has recruited 12 team members thus far! Additional members of the SPPA Community are encouraged to sign up and participate on our team. If you are unable to participate, we will gladly accept donations. (Directions to register as a team member or donate can be found here).
  • Upcoming Events: CSC would like to see the SPPA Community participate more in our events! For more information about CSC events this Spring, please click here.

New Visions for Public Affairs (NVPA) Annual Symposium: This Thursday (4/18), NVPA¾ SPPA’s student-led journal¾is hosting its Annual Research Symposium! The event will begin at 10:30AM in The Gallery of the Perkins Student Center. The Symposium’s Keynote Speaker will be Dr. Robert Warren. Lunch will be provided for symposium attendees. Attendees will also have the opportunity to pick up one of the very rare, first-ever print editions of the 5th volume of the NVPA Journal! We look forward to seeing you there.

Delaware Association for Public Administration (DAPA) Spring 2013 Luncheon: DAPA is hosting its Spring 2013 Luncheon at McGlynn’s Pub & Restaurant (800 North State Street
Dover, Delaware) in Dover on Tuesday, April 23rd, from 12:30-1:30PM. This event will provide public service professionals and students the opportunity to network. Please register* for this event here by April 16th.

SAPA Updates, Week 28

SAPA Community Service Committee (CSC): On Monday, April 15th, SAPA’s CSC will hold its next meeting. The meeting will begin at 5PM in Graham Hall’s Student Resource Room (Graham Hall, Room 189).

Newark Spring Community Clean Up: Grab your family and friends and come make Newark beautiful! Join the SAPA Community Service Committee at the City of Newark Municipal Building (220 South Main Street, Newark, DE 19711) on Saturday, April 20th at 9AM and get an early start to your Earth Day celebrations. Trash bags and a snack will be provided to all who help (T-shirts will be given to the first 200 volunteers). Complimentary brunch will also be provided to volunteers after the event! SAPA Bake Sale, Volunteers Needed: On Monday, April 15th, SAPA will be hosting its Annual Spring Bake Sale fundraiser. To ensure that the event is successful, we are asking the SPPA Community to help support SAPA by contributing a baked item to our bake sale or volunteering during the event. The Graduate Student Forum¾Call for Poster Presentations: The Graduate Student Forum is now accepting poster abstracts for its 2013 Forum. 2013-2014 SAPA Election Results: The results are in, and the following candidates were elected to SAPA Officer Positions for the 2013-2014 academic school year:

Jason Bourke (President); Kelly Smith (Vice President); Brooke Gessner (Secretary); Amanda Brown (Treasurer); Gabrielle Vicari (MA-HP Representative); David Carter (PhD Representative); Benjamin Wallace (MS-DISA Representative); David Karas (MA-UAPP Representative); Verity Watson (MPA Representative); and Nadine Sabater (Continuing Education Representative).

Also, all proposed amendments to the SAPA Bylaws were approved.

Congratulations to the newly elected Officers, and thank you to everyone who participated in the election process!

SAPA Bowling Social, ‘Strikes for SAPA’: It’s not too late to buy tickets for SAPA’s Bowling Social, which will take place tonight at the Brunswick Blue Hen Lanes (501 Newark Shopping Center, Newark, DE 19711) from 10PM to Midnight! You can still purchase tickets to the event from for $7at the door. Don’t forget to join the event on Facebook here!

SAPA’s UD Relay for Life Team: SAPA’s Community Service Committee will be participating in the fight against cancer by forming a SAPA Relay for Life of UD team. This year’s Relay for Life of UD event will take place at UD’s Field House from May 4th – May 5th.  SAPA’s team co-captains are Alexandra Leach (leachal@udel.edu) and Leann Moore (lmoore@udel.edu). Red Cross disaster volunteer Course: “An Overview” is the first class required for persons who are interested in becoming a Red Cross disaster volunteer.  Taking the course is a great way to learn how the American Red Cross responds to disasters, and how you can be involved.  The class will be offered on Wednesday, March 13th from 9AM-12PM in the DRC Conference room (Graham Hall, Room166), free of charge. (The online registration for this class indicates that it will go until 1PM, but the course will adjourn by noon, if not earlier). Click here to register for the course. UDANCE 2013 Donations: Are you interested in contributing monetary donations to fight childhood Cancer while helping SAPA secure funds to continue to support student development in SPPA? Allie Rosenberg, a SPPA 4+1 MPA candidate, has pledged to help raise funds for UDance (http://udancedelaware.org/) and match select funds donated to UDance by SPPA faculty, staff, and students to SAPA. New Castle County Job Fair: On Wednesday, March 6th from 10AM to 2PM, a job fair will be held at the Embassy Suites (654 S. College Avenue, Newark, DE). U.S. Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons as well as U.S. Representative John Carney will host the event. Representatives from government agencies, private sector organizations, staffing agencies, and more will be in attendance.

College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) Career Networking Night: It’s not too late to register for CAS’ Career Networking Night, which will begin at 6PM on Thursday, March 7th, in the Trabant University Center’s Multipurpose Room A&B (17 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19716). SAPA General Meetings: Join SAPA next Monday (3/4) for our second General Meeting of the Spring Semester! The Meeting will begin at 5:30PM in Graham Hall, Room 176. SAPA 2013-2014 Elections: Tomorrow is the last day to submit nominations for Officer positions in SAPA! If you would like to nominate a student for an Officer Position, please send an e-mail message to sapassociation@gmail.com with the following information:

  • The nominee’s full name;
  • The title of the position(s) you wish to nominate the candidate for; and
  • The nominee’s email address.

Proposed Amendments to SAPA Bylaws: During this year’s SAPA elections, SPPA students will be asked to vote on a proposed set of amendments to SAPA Bylaws.  The last major review and amendment of the SAPA Bylaws occurred on March 2nd, 2012. Please click here to review the updated Bylaws and a copy of the March 2nd, 2012 Bylaws. SAPA welcomes your feedback, and invites you to share your thoughts or ask questions by emailing sapassociation@gmail.com. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with these changes and vote this spring!

Open House Happy Hour: Join SAPA in welcoming new faces to campus! This Friday (3/1), SAPA will be hosting a happy hour at Kildare’s Irish Pub (45 E Main St Newark, DE 19711) to welcome potential students to the SPPA family! SAPA Basketball Outing: Join SAPA to watch your Fighting Blue Hens Men’s Basketball Team take on George Mason University on Saturday, March 2nd, at 2pm in the Bob Carpenter Center! This event is open to all students (full and part-time), along with families of students.  Ticket prices will range from $12 to $15. If you are interested in attending, please email Matt Parkhurst (mpark@udel.edu) by Thursday, February 28th to confirm your attendance and to let us know how many people you will be bringing to the event. SPPA Spring Contemporary Issues Series: Delaware Congressman John Carney is scheduled to speak tonight (2/19) at 5PM in Kirkbride Hall, Room 205.  All students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend! Congressman Carney will examine the recent activities of the Congress as they relate to the fiscal cliff, and he will discuss what will come next for the Congress this year. SPPA Research Seminar Series: SPPA’s Research Seminar Series kicks off this Thursday, (2/21) at 12:30PM in Graham Hall, Room 185. The Series’ first presenter is Dan T. Brown, an Associate Policy Scientist at the Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research. His presentation will center on: “Topics in Delaware’s Electricity Markets: Decoupling, Energy Efficiency, and State Policy”. Lunch will be provided, courtesy of SPPA. Graduate Student Government Spring Semester Eat and Greet: Join UD grad students on February 26th from 5PM to 6:30PM for wine, cheese, and musical entertainment! Mid-Atlantic Region’s Policy Solutions Challenge USA Competition: Come out and support your fellow classmates and School as they complete against nearby schools in this year’s Regional Mid-Atlantic Policy Solutions Challenge competitionThe competition will be held in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center (325 Academy Street, Newark, Delaware) on Saturday, February 16th. Coffee and registration will be available at 8:30AM, and presentations will begin at 9AM. Lunch will also be served, and the event will convene by early afternoon. SAPA Updates, Week 20

WELCOME BACK HAPPY HOUR: To get everyone back into the spirit of the academic semester, SAPA will be hosting a happy hour on Thursday, February 7th @ 6:00PM at MoJo Main (270 East Main Street Newark, DE 19711). Appetizers will be served, and the event will be free. Please invite fellow SPPA undergraduate and graduate students out for good food and good times!

SAPA GENERAL MEETINGS: SAPA’s Executive Board has decided to hold SAPA General Meetings on stagger days- of-the-week (Mondays / Thursdays). Spring Semester general meetings will be held @5:30PM. Meeting dates this semester are: Monday, February 11th; Thursday, March 7th; Monday, April 8th; and Thursday, May 2nd.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO STAFF POLICY SOLUTIONS COMPETITION: Dr. Sarzynski, SPPA professor and faculty coach for SPPA’s Policy Solutions Challenge Team, needs volunteers on Friday, February 15th and Saturday, February 16th from 8AM to 1:30PM to staff the Mid-Atlantic Region’s Policy Solutions Challenge USA Competition. Volunteers would be required to staff a welcome table, register competition attendees, help with set-up, or direct out of town teams. MID-ATLANTIC REGION’S POLICY SOLUTIONS CHALLENGE USA COMPETITION: Come out and support your fellow classmates and School as they complete against nearby schools in this year’s Regional Mid-Atlantic Policy Solution Challenge USA competition! This year, the School of Public Policy and Administration has the privilege of as serving as the Mid-Atlantic Host of the Policy Solution Challenge USA Competition, a national competition among teams of students from U.S. schools of public policy, public affairs and public administration to develop innovative solutions to the most important policy problems facing the country. The topic for the 2013 Challenge is ‘Responses to Childhood Obesity in the U.S.‘.

The competition will be held in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center (325 Academy Street, Newark, Delaware) on Saturday, February 16th. The SAPA Board would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all attendees of the Holiday Party for a wonderful evening. HURRICANE SANDY COLLECTION DRIVE: SAPA’s Community Service Committee is still collecting monetary donations to benefit local organizations in New Jersey and New York who are providing relief efforts to victims of Hurricane Sandy. The donation drive will end this Friday, December 14th. A donation jar has been set up in Diana Simmons’ office in 184A Graham Hall. These communities have a long road to recovery and your donation can truly make a difference. Thank you in advance for your support!

SAPA COOKIE TINS AND KITS: Did you miss the SAPA Bake Sale on December 5th or did you like our baked goods so much that you want more? Here’s your chance! Support your student association by pre-ordering a cookie and goodies tin for $9 or a cookie kit for $5. These tins and kits make great gifts or yummy additions to holiday fare! All proceeds will go towards the SAPA Award! Please sign up to purchase a kit or tin here  by Monday, December 17th at 5PM. GRADUATE STUDENT GOVERNMENT (GSG) MEETING: The next GSG meeting will be held this Thursday (12/6) at 5:30PM in Memorial Hall Room 127.

SAPA BAKE SALE: On Wednesday, December 5th from 10AM-3PM in Graham Hall Room 183, SAPA will be hosting its Annual Bake Sale! Purchasing our baked goods will help support the SAPA Student Award. To ensure that the fundraiser is a success, we are seeking the help of volunteer bakers! Volunteer bakers will help SAPA Board Members bake and assemble baked goods for the bake sale. To sign up to help, please click here and provide us with the following information:

• Your first and last name,
• Your email address,
• The item(s) you will be bringing to the bake sale, and
• Your ability to bring your baked good(s) to Graham Hall Room 183 by 9AM on December 5th.

During the fundraiser on December 5th, we will also be taking orders for holiday cookie tins and cookie baking kits that you can purchase and share with your family over the holidays!
