Kurzweil 3000 Instructions

You can open almost any electronic file type with Kurzweil 3000, including Word, PDF, HTML, and EPUB.  For help using Kurzweil including new features and updates, check out Kurzweil Academy.

Obtain Kurzweil
Username and Password.

  1. You will get a username and password for Kurzweil 3000 at your registration meeting or Assistive Technology Meeting.
  2. You will receive a confirmation email from Kurzweil Education Customer Service with the subject “Kurzweil Account Activated”.  The email will contain your username, so SAVE this email. Note that if you do not receive a welcome email to check your spam or junk folder.

Accessing Kurzweil 3000

  1. Go to kurzweil3000.com and log in with your username and password. 
  2. Opening Documents:
    • Local Files: Open files directly from your computer using the “Open” option. 
    • Universal Library: Access files stored in your folders or public folders within the Kurzweil 3000 cloud. 
    • Cloud Storage: Connect to Google Drive or OneDrive to access files from these platforms. 

Kurzweil Read the Web Extension
– Google Chrome

  • Go to the Chrome web store
  • Search for “Kurzweil”
  • Select “Read The Web”
  • Once installed, go to any website.  A pop will appear on your screen asking for your Kurzweil login. Once logged in, you will see a set of controls and will be able to use Kurzweil to read the web.

From the Kurzweil Software

  • Log into Kurzweil (if you have not downloaded it to your local computer, see above links)
  • Select READ from the menu that runs across the top (the one at the very top that includes File, Edit, Scan, etc.)
  • Select READ THE WEB from the dropdown menu
  • A new browser window will open and a Kurzweil toolbar will appear at the top of the browser window.
  • You must open the browser from inside of Kurzweil for it to read.

Note: The first time you use this feature, you may be instructed to install the KESI add-on. Follow the on-screen directions or contact the DSS office for assistance.
