TJ COX

TJ COX

Candidate for President

Biography

Hello! My name is TJ Cox and I am a Junior Financial Planning major with a minor in Trust Management.

Outside of the Resident Student Association I am fairly involved with Lerner College of Business and some of the extracurriculars that are based within it. I am currently a member of the Hens of Wall Street organization which is an organization for students to network and meet with current business professionals. I am also a part of a rising business fraternity called Phi Chi Theta, which is an excellent place where I’ve been able to hone my professionalism. Outside of school I’ve had the opportunity to work at the University as a Lab Assistant at the Purnell trading center.

When I first arrived at UD my very first opportunity on campus was running for the Vice President of Finance for Harrington Community Council. Throughout my first year I was able to experience the joys of working with a team to help bring about tangible change within the area that you lived in and I was also able to have an insight into the greater RSA organization and what we really stand for. During my freshman year I just really began to really enjoy working with RSA and after the end of my freshman year I wanted to try and reach out and run for a position on the executive board as their Director of Finance. Luckily, I was able to be elected and I was able to help the RSA organization on a greater scale than previous. I wanted to continue with RSA through my junior year and I chose to do that as the Director of Finance once again. This year was a little different however, as I was exposed to new leadership opportunities and experiences that have led me to grow in ways that I never had thought.I would love to be able to continue to grow and give back next year by serving as the President and ensuring that we’ll be able to continue to help change resident’s lives.

RSA has without a doubt been instrumental to my time here at UD and I would love to continue to “make the residence halls a home” in my final year at UD!

Statement of Intent

This year has been one unlike any other before or after it, but it’s been an amazing time for growth and learning. Throughout this year as I have served on the Executive Board as the Director of Finance, I have just been thinking of ways that I can continue to help this organization. I believe my main motivation is to have a positive impact on not only our organization but the campus and students as well. My main goal next year, if elected as President, would be to do my best to help RSA continue to uphold the constitution and the values of this organization throughout the next academic year and beyond. I would hope to be a person to help serve the community and the organization better .I hope to do this by dedicating my time over the next few months in order to better understand the intricacies of the role and organization.

First for implementing more programming and advocacy efforts. I believe that the full reopening for campus would allow for more opportunities to work more collaboratively with the surrounding organizations and businesses. This collaborative effort would boast the benefits of allowing the reach of our events more impactful as it would reach a larger audience. Another solution to this effort would be to work around with the Director of Finance and other executive board members to ensure that there are enough funds to help the CABs be able to perform more events securely. I would love for there to be a stable number of events for students to make the residence halls feel like more of a home and form closer connections.

My second objective is a bit more of a personal one, but I feel as though to be the President that RSA can have I should be able to properly understand the roots and history of the organization. By understanding the history and origins of the organization I will be able to better understand and act with the organization’s interest in mind. I would also love to learn more about the history and relationship that the organization has with Residence Life and Housing and do my best to work with them for the students on campus.

Finally, I just want to be able to be someone that others can lean on. Throughout my past year on the Executive Board, I really learned the importance of communication with others and how essential it is to success. I realize that as the President, I would love to be able to help the Executive Board follow through with as many events that we could fit into the new semester. Throughout the last three years I have been blessed with the opportunity to serve on the Community Council in my freshman year and the executive board during my sophomore and junior year. I would love to be able to continue to serve on the RSA and I hope that you consider voting for me as the President for the Resident Student Association. Thank you so much!

SYLVIA MENCL

SYLVIA MENCL

Candidate for Vice President

Biography

Hello. My name is Sylvia Mencl. I am currently a junior with an Art History and Art Conservation major and a chemistry minor. I am currently the National Communications Coordinator (NCC) for the Resident Student Association. My leadership journey began when I decided to be the volunteers coordinator for HENs where I was responsible for planning the day of service. Unfortunately due to Covid-19, I was unable to finish planning it. I joined another leadership position again sophomore spring semester when I decided to become part of the North Central Community Advocacy Board (CAB) as the Vice President of finance after witnessing the frustration on lack of community engagement and lack of in person events. As a member of the CAB, I was in charge of finances, creating budgets, and helping to organize events. Although we only planned on event, I aspired to join the EBoard. I was drawn to the NCC position. The idea of attending conference, representing the school and meeting students across the national fascinated me. I became the NCC-IT and attended my first conference that summer. Here, I was also introduced to parli pro, board room, constitutions, and legislation for the first time. Through this position and being a part of RSA has helped me get out of my comfort zone, has taught me life lessons and has helped me meet amazing people from across campus. I truly value this organization and what it stands for and I want to continue to advocate for students as vice president.

Statement of Intent

This year we’ve really grown and rebounded as an organization. We’ve gained more members especially very passionate ones and have been able to program more in person events. I believe my goals will positively impact the organization, will increase community engagement, and will help build relationships across the campus. My main goals as RSA Vice President would be collaboration and reach.

One of my main goals is to promote collaboration with other organizations. I believe it is important to form relationships with other resident student organizations on campus. We would achieve this by participating in more co-sponsorships (either volunteering our time or finances), have co-sponsorships of our own or attend and participate more at other club and university sponsored events. It would also be beneficial to collaborate with other leadership organizations on campus like the Blue Hen Leadership Program, RAILE, or with the honors community. This could also help create a stronger identity for us on campus. With so many leadership and residence housing affiliated organizations it is important to distinguish ourselves from them and to clear any misunderstandings people have about this organization. I believe that collaborations is one of the ways we can achieve this.

My second goal is to continue to try and get our sister organization NRHH back. NRHH is a vital part of the campus community. I would like to provide them with support to help them grow and would like to bring back the various events that we would co-host with them throughout the year such as Campus Residence Hall Month. We could also table together with them at the beginning of the year and advertise for them. Finally, I would also like to grow our social media presence to make our social media advertising more effective.

By being part of RSA this year, I have learned so much about myself, have grown as a leader, have enjoyed being involved in the community, and met so many passionate leaders who have inspired me. I would love to continue to be a part of this amazing and impactful organization. Please consider voting for me as the Vice President of the Resident Student Association. Thank you!

SIERRA LEGG

SIERRA LEGG

Candidate for Director of Advocacy

Biography
Hello! My name is Sierra Legg and I am currently a freshman university studies major and plan to declare a major in marketing and a minor in international business in the Fall.
Besides the Resident Student Association (RSA), I am involved with a multitude of various clubs on campus. Those of which include Collar Scholars, Charity crossing, Women in business, and the East Campus Community Advocacy Board (CAB). Of all these Clubs I would have to say I spend most of my time on it would have to be the East Campus Community Advocacy Board and Resident Student Association.
Since my time on campus, I have been heavily involved in CAB and RSA. My time at CAB and as a vice president has given me a lot of experience contacting different individuals on campus and creating connections with said people. I have also gained knowledge on collecting information from our residents and getting the changes needed in our residence halls promptly. As for RSA I have been involved in COAC as a vice president of advocacy and have been taken throughout the brainstorming process as well as execution process of initiating advocacy initiatives. Also during my time at RSA, I have made contact with a variety of different groups on campus that make a big impact on the day-to-day of a resident.
“Making the resident halls a home” this statement is especially impactful for me as that is why I join the organization in the first place to make living on campus a more enjoyable and comfortable experience for all. If voted into the position of Director of Advocacy I plan to make this statement hold true for all students on campus.
Statement of Intent

This year has been busy, to say the least as I have navigated my first year of college as well as learned and grown in the Resident Student Association. Through my time serving as a vice president of advocacy on my Community Advocacy Board of East Campus, I have realized a newfound love for it as well as a passion for making a real difference in the lives of residents on campus. As I realized this passion I also realized something I would like to improve around campus to make it a more comfortable place as well as improve the organization. The main ideas that I plan to implement would be building relationships with student organizations on campus and solving the little everyday problems that affect all residents.

First, I would like to build relationships with student organizations on campus. This idea has come to me because of the great resources that the organization of RSA has in getting in touch with key players in student life such as UDPD and UD dining. Having access to these groups alone is an amazing thing but it is not as impactful as it could be if we had more access to residents. This problem could be solved by having a relationship with student groups on campus so we can get a wider variety of information and feedback from the residents. Having for example a representative from a couple of student groups on campus during an important conversation that way we can better advocate for more students. I would execute this by personally contacting a variety of student groups on campus to see if they would be interested and collaborate with them on making a statement or representative to advocate for them.

Second, I would like to focus on the day-to-day life of a resident at the University of Delaware and see the problems that are affecting them right now. With that being said we are going into the month of April at the moment we all know what that means the season of rain. As the days pass and it seems to rain more and more I have noticed a problem on campus, no one seems to remember their umbrella! This is why I have come up with the idea of having an umbrella network where we would have umbrella stations all around campus outside of student centers, resident halls, and lecture halls. We would get the umbrellas through donations and purchasing ourselves. This way if a student forgets their umbrella they can grab one of the ones provided to them at the umbrella station and drop them off at the next location they go to so it is there for someone else to use. This is just one of the initiatives I plan on implementing but this is an example of one of the day-to-day problems affecting students that I plan to solve.

Over my year here I have fallen in love with the Resident Student Association as well as the power that this organization holds to make a great impact on student life. I believe that I do have the ability to really do it justice and get the power back into our resident’s hands as well as make the campus a better place for you and me!

VICTORIA ADAMS

VICTORIA ADAMS

Candidate for Director of Programming

Biography

Hello. My name is Tori and I am a Freshman Nutrition and Dietetics major.

Outside of academics and the Resident Student Association, I am also involved in Collar Scholars as a puppy sitter, where I am able to help those raising service dogs. Prior to college life, I was heavily involved with martial arts, where I was an instructor for nearly five years, teaching students from ages four to twelve the art of Taekwondo.

Though I am only a freshman, I have been involved with the East Campus Community Advocacy Board and the Resident Student Association. On the East Campus Community Advocacy Board, I was able to connect with other freshmen on east campus and help to advocate for their interests. In my position as Vice President of Advocacy and later Vice President of Marketing and Communications, I aided in our free laundry advocacy initiative, aiming to change the university’s method of charging students for laundry. Currently, I am leading programming efforts to host a live music event in preparation for the end of the semester.

I would love to continue “Making the Residence Halls a Home!” as the next Director of Programming!

Statement of Intent

Throughout the past year, I have learned so much about myself and the community I have found myself a part of. Serving as a Community Advocacy Board representative and being involved with the Resident Student Association has helped me to realize my passion for community, specifically in the aspects concerned with programming. As next year’s Director of Programming, I would have the goal of not only hosting community events, but establishing a lasting connection with community members in order to better advocate for their interests.

Hosting events for the community is the constitutional responsibility of the director of programming, though it is also something I personally enjoy. As a member of the East Campus Community Advocacy Board, I have been in a position to organize and host events for East Campus, though my favorite has been our live music event on the turf. It is currently still in progress, but I have fallen in love with the act of planning and coordinating throughout this event. In this position, I will plan and host as many events as time permits and I will ensure that they are engaging to those in attendance. I want to create an atmosphere of relief from the stresses of academics and outside life.

In creating this relaxed environment, I hope to establish lasting, meaningful connections with members of the community. I want not only myself, but other executive board members to be able to communicate effectively with those in the community in order to better understand their interests, needs, and concerns. With so few eboard members to represent the whole of on-campus students, feedback and community outreach should be a priority, as it would allow for the organization as a whole to make all students feel welcome and included in their residence hall. Though advocacy is the responsibility of the Director of Advocacy, I feel that these two positions are so closely related that working together during large events is inevitable, as well as a perfect opportunity to speak with other students that may be able to offer valuable insight.

I love the University of Delaware and have found the Resident Student Association to be the perfect way to connect with other students who share my desire to help others feel more welcome and at home. Living on campus as a freshman has been challenging and in the future I hope to continue helping other students to feel comfortable and welcome, truly “making the residence halls a home!”

ROXANA GIL-BAUTISTA

ROXANA GIL-BAUTISTA

Candidate for Director of Programming

Biography

Hello! My name is Roxana Gil-Bautista and I am from Millsboro, Delaware. I am a Junior Exercise Science major. Currently, I live in the Courtyard and hopefully live on campus next semester.

Outside of the Resident Student Association, I like attending campus events, different club organizations meetings, or out and about. Ever since freshman year, I have been heavily involved in the Resident Student Association and would like to continue my journey in this amazing organization that has positively impacted my life and our community as a whole.

On my arrival at UD, I directly connected with RSA and took my chances for running for President of Gilbert Community Council, now known as CAB today. Luckily, with astounding support was elected as President which was one of my favorite highlights of my freshman year. I went to weekly general meetings and worked with my peers to create a home environment for residents in my building. The best experience was working together with an awesome group of students who wanted to make an impact on residents’ college experience. As of now, I am the Director of Programming for RSA and have learned so much. I can say I have the experience to have successful events and make a positive impact on the residents of our community on a larger magnitude. I have learned so much about the position without a doubt through the years. I have gained skills along the way professionally and immense personal growth. I truly do understand what it takes for this position and believe I have those qualities within myself to exceed my own expectations.

I want to make a difference in the lives of residents, continue to show my support in the community, and love to continue “Making the Residence Halls a Home!” in my last year here at UD. Thank you so much!

Statement of Intent

I have been reflecting on running for election once again and came to the conclusion that I should run for election once more for the Director of Programming of the Resident Student Association. I have set goals that I want to continue to pursue during the 2022-2023 year which are building solidified structure for programming, having successful events, and having a positive impact on the community.

First, building a structure around programming essentially, programing 101, I would like to plan meetings for those who are interested to join so CABs can interact and have a solid foundation in communication. In GA meetings plan activities we can do as a group. These could be fun educational workshops. As a unit, we can build connections and increase your knowledge and understanding of being leaders in our communities. Using our practices in different professional settings.

Second, to ensure successful events to occur, I want to control different aspects to know how I can be most effective, essentially the different ways of planning and communicating. For instance, I want to reach out to different vendors and organizations on campus, and maintaining appropriate deadlines to implement in events. On a larger scale, I want to connect with residents all over campus and continue to organize events that build connections.

Lastly, I want to have a positive impact above and beyond my limitations. I am willing to step up my game to help residents whenever possible. As the Director of Programming that is my final goal. I want to continue my journey in RSA and want to make a difference in the lives of residents, continue to show my support in the community, and love to continue “Making the Residence Halls a Home!” Thank you!
