Weeks 12 and 13 – Pick your own topic(s)

Format

  • Online: All the activities for this week are located on the web.
  • Asynchronous: There is no component for this week that requires to connect in real time with colleagues or the instructor.

Quote

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that’s clear-
I will choose Free Will.
– Rush, Freewill

Overview

For the last two weeks where we will cover content, we are going to be doing something a little different. I have laid out a skeleton for all the topics people expressed interest in, and linked to certain resources to get you started. Your role will be to find additional resources, sequence them, and think of a learning activities that students in this class would complete to learn about the topic. You will basically  play Mathieu’s role for two weeks one week (updated: Since most of you already have submitted 10 weekly projects, you can submit only one “playlist” if you want to).

Learning objectives

  • Find learning materials online about specific topic.
  • Explore different ways to search for learning materials, beyond Google search.
  • Identify social media influencers on specific topic.
  • Review, curate, and sequence learning materials.
  • Design learning activities to help learners apply the knowledge.

Action items

1. Pick two one or two of the following topics you have a stronger interest for and sign in your name so others know your choices. To reduce the workload, you are welcome to work in groups for this assignment, but you can also do it individually if you want. Templates have been partially filled out to get you started:

2. For each topic you selected, copy the template in a personal Google Doc.

3. Search for videos, links, and people related to the topics, and paste the URLs of resources you want to consider in the document. When searching, consider the following:

  • Look at sources that have already been bookmarked or pinned by our group.
  • Look for keywords and hashtags in Twitter and Google+.
  • Consider the validity of the information.
  • Try to identify at least one teacher practice (a teacher sharing a practice as a blog post, a video, etc.).
  • Identify at least one social media influencer (a person, not an organisation) for each topic.

4. Write down 3 to 5 learning objectives for this lesson.

5. Curate (some sources will be dropped from your original list) your list of resources into a logical sequence that will require between one to three hours to consult (including media and reading time).

6. Design and write down a learning activity that will help the learner put the concept into practice or reflect on the impact of the topic on their practice. This activity should include an assessment strategy, such as a rubric.

7. For each of your topics, make your Google Doc open to the public, and copy its URL in template listed in step 1, next to your name. You will also submit the URL to Canvas (Topic 1Topic 2 – optional). The deadline for the completion of this activity (the two topics) is Wednesday, November 28 at 8:00 p.m. EST, but you’re invited to submit your first one sooner than later. Both topics will be graded individually as a part of the weekly projects.

8. This is your last chance to participate online, so make sure to pin, bookmark, tweet, talk on Google+, comment on each other’s posts, etc.
