The Faculty Meeting scheduled for Friday, February 14, 2014 was cancelled due to snow.

The following two proposals were voted on electronically, instead.

Monday, February 17, all faculty were invited to cast their votes on two proposals.  Voting closed on Wednesday, February 19.  In both votes, a quorum was reached.  Here are the results of the votes:

Research Proposal: Linguistic Range of Matriculating ESL Students’ Writing

Faculty Meeting – III14 1/31/14

Faculty Meeting Session III14

Memorial Hall 123, 1:00 pm on Friday, January 31, 2014

Meeting Notes

New Pearson Rep, UD Alum Tom Cleary was present for the beginning of the meeting. He plans to get the names of the level coordinators and textbook committee members. He will provide teachers’ copies of textbooks.

This week UD signed agreement with Japan’s Saitama University. This will help encourage undergrad Japanese students to go abroad. UDaily article is here: http://www.udel.edu/udaily/2014/jan/saitama-012814.html

We are expecting up to 100 students to attend as part of the Laureate Program special group this summer.

Dr. Stevens is going to China and Korea as part of a delegation from the University (Provost and Assistant Provost) at the end of March.

Cell phone holders/organizers have been purchased and are available from Chris Smith. There is not an explicit Institute-wide cellphone policy. However, all students must turn in their cell phones during tests. Upon returning tests, students should not have their cell phones, either. Some instructors recommend labeling the organizers with students’ names.

Proposal: Nigel Caplan has been approved by IRB to conduct research on the student essays. He may do a quantitative or qualitative research (has permission for both). He would like to see the difference between essays double-rated as 6.0, 6.5, and 7.0. He’ll be looking at vocabulary, preparedness, and maybe to identify what students need to be taught. There will be a vote at the next faculty meeting.

Proposal: Change to CAP Undergraduate pre-requisite by offering the L/S FILM VI class to only meet the speaking requirement for students after they have taken EAPVI (similar to the L/S DRAMA class). There will be a vote at the next faculty meeting.

Holiday Policy

It is the policy of the University of Delaware not to cancel classes on religious holidays. However, students and faculty are encouraged to exercise their own judgment pertaining to their attendance on these days. In addition, faculty are encouraged not to schedule examinations or require the submission of special assignments on the following days: the evening before as well as the first two days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur in the fall term, Good Friday and the evenings before and the first two days of Passover in the spring semester, the Eid ending Ramadan (whenever this lunar holiday occurs), and the Chinese New Year.  Absences on these religious holidays are recognized as excused. Nevertheless, students are urged to remind the instructor of their intention to be absent on a particular upcoming holiday.

Students on probation are not marked excused if miss due to holiday. However, other students should not be marked absent, but are excused for missing class if absent due to holiday. Note that individual national holidays are not excused. Only those holidays as recognized by the University are excused.

Other excused absences are if a student is hospitalized overnight or if they are interviewing at a university for admission to a program.
