Syllabi

Each teacher is required to have a syllabus for the class(es) he or she is teaching based on fixed objectives from the curriculum. In addition to the learning objectives, syllabi should include office hours (faculty are required to have three office hours per week), grading system, attendance policy, and textbooks. These syllabi are to be distributed to the students on the first day of class or no later than Wednesday of the first week. The Associate Director has copies of syllabi for all levels and classes.

Requirements

All Syllabi must have:

  • Office hours
  • Your email address
  • Grading system
  • Required Textbooks

Syllabi must have objectives printed on them, and these objectives should be the same as those appearing on last session’s syllabus for the same level. All elective classes must also have language objectives corresponding to the general class for that level. Language objectives must be identical among multiple sections of a given level.

Any change in language objectives must be approved by the Curriculum Committee. Please remember that it is University policy that syllabi must be provided for all courses, and these should be provided in a timely fashion. ELI students must receive copies of syllabi no later than Wednesday of the first week of the session. Be sure to review syllabi carefully with your students.

Keep your syllabi up to date; remember that your syllabus is your commitment and the ELI’s commitment to our students. Honoring this promise includes using the book as fully as possible and completing identified assignments. If you cannot complete the book, please state upfront why and what you will cover. Please make sure your L /S and R/W objectives follow the curriculum for your particular level, including those for oral grammar, intelligibility, and written grammar. Be sure to include on the syllabus your office hours, your email address, your grading system, ELI attendance policy, and required textbooks.
