As discussed in a prior edition of the Canvas@UD Newsletter, several Canvas external tool integrations are scheduled for LTI 1.1 to LTI 1.3 migration.  This version upgrade is recommended to meet the latest learning tools standards.  Core functionality and features provided by the vendor should not change, but if you rely on a tool planned for upgrade, you may wish to contact your vendor’s customer support representative for information regarding how the change may affect your workflow.

The LMS team intends to complete this process the week of May 27 through May 31.  This schedule coincides with the week between spring and summer terms to minimize the impact on Canvas users.  No tool will be changed until after grades are due on  May 28.  You can expect all affected tools to be upgraded prior to the start summer term beginning June 3.  For a short time, both versions of the tool may be available to complete the term but to allow you to prepare your upcoming summer sites.  Please pay attention to the tool titles to ensure you are using the correct tool.

Depending on the vendor’s integration implementation, existing links to these tools in Canvas course sites may break after the update.  The link break will not affect the content in that external tool, and you should be able to visit the tool’s external environment directly if needed.  If you intend to continue using a tool in an existing site or copy a site with content linked to the LTI 1.1 integration to new course shells, you will likely need to relink or recreate that content linking to the new tool.  For example, external tool type assignments and module links will need to be relinked.

If you use any of the external tools listed below scheduled for migration in your courses, please review any steps you may need to take to ensure the tool works correctly in your course site starting Summer 2024.

W. W. Norton

The current LTI 1.1 for this tool is named W. W. Norton.  It is being replaced with an LTI 1.3 tool named W. W. Norton LTI 1.3.  The new tool is planned to be available starting May 29.  Unfortunately, the vendor’s migration tools do not allow for both tools to be enabled simultaneously.    Once the existing LTI 1.1 integration is removed, links to the tool in all existing Canvas course sites will no longer work.  The vendor content will still be available in the vendor environment, only the access from your Canvas course is being removed.

You must update your course sites to use the new tool starting in Summer 2024.  It is recommended that you delete any copied links in your summer or other upcoming sites and use the new tool.  At this time, the vendor has not made LTI 1.3 tool instructor notes available but states instructions will be posted through their knowledge base, Instructor Help Notes.  Please watch for updates from your vendor representative.

CidiLabs Multi-Tool

The current LTI 1.1 integration for this tool is named Multi-Tool.  It is being replaced with an LTI 1.3 tool named Cidi Labs Multi-Tool.  Once the existing LTI 1.1 tool is disabled, it will be removed from the course navigation of your courses where enabled.  If you wish to continue to use the tool, you must enable the LTI 1.3 integration using Settings -> Navigation.  The update does not include any functional changes and is only for a security update.  For additional Multi-Tool support, please see the Cidi Labs guide, How to build courses with the Multi-Tool.  For naming consistency, the Cidi Labs Upload/Embed Image tool available in the Canvas rich content editor (RCE) has also been updated.  It is now named Cidi Labs Upload/Embed Image.

If you have questions about these changes, please contact the LMS team at canvas-info@udel.edu.
