Ice Cream Social

Over 100 students, postdocs, faculty, and staff attended the 2013 WIE ice cream social. The DuPont Hall lobby was so full that the ice cream line extended well into the hallway! We served three types of UDairy ice cream, complete with toppings, on this very hot day. This year’s event featured a raffle — three students each won a $10 Starbucks gift certificate by correctly answering a WIE quiz question and then having their entry selected.

AWIS Work-Life Satisfaction Workshop

Twelve women faculty and fifteen women graduate students from STEM fields across campus joined AWIS presenters Cindy Simpson and Dr. Gail Gasparich (Towson University) for workshops on Career-Life Satisfaction. The two workshops, one in the morning for faculty and one in the afternoon for graduate students, were interactive and included many opportunities for discussion. Participating faculty and students enjoyed getting to know each other a bit better!

Meet Your Faculty Lunch with Prof. Kathy McCoy

Dr. McCoy from the Department of Computer and Information Sciences was our guest speaker at this semester’s “Meet Your Faculty” pizza lunch. Students primarily from her department gathered to learn more about Dr. McCoy and her experiences as a woman in science.

Dr. Shirley Malcom Visit

Dr. Shirley Malcom, Head of the Directorate for Education and Human Resources Programs of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), visited on April 3. She met with WIE students and faculty groups during her visit and gave a wonderful public talk entitled “Making the Case for Diversity in STEM.”  

Graduate School Panel

Around 30 undergraduates attended this panel, which was co-sponsored by the University of Delaware Honors Program. Graduate students from each engineering department described their experiences and offered advice to undergrads interested in pursuing graduate studies.

Career Panel

Over 70 graduate students and postdocs attended this year’s panel. Panelists — UD alumni, faculty, and postdocs — described a range of career opportunities for engineering graduate students, including consulting, industry, and academia. Participants stayed after the career panel for further discussion during the spring semester coffee break. Thank you to the panel:

  • Yamaira Gonzalez, process engineer, DuPont;
  • Taesha Mapp-Rivera, strategy and planning manager, DuPont;
  • Joshua Hertz, UD assistant professor of mechanical engineering
  • Souad Koliai, UD visiting scholar in electrical and computer engineering;

International Student Workshop

Close to 60 international graduate students, postdocs, and faculty packed into Spencer 114 to attend this year’s workshop for international students. Office of International Students and Scholars representatives Anne McCullin and Janica Kriss offered tips and information on topics such as OPT and CPT.

Dr. Gilda Barabino Visit

Dr. GIlda Barabino, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory, visited UD February 7-8. She gave a Biomedical Engineering seminar on Thursday and a public talk on Friday entitled “Identity formation and Career Progression:Differential Experiences for Underrepresented Minorities.” Click here to hear Friday’s talk on UDCapture. Dr. Barabino also had lunch with the WIE Graduate Student Steering Committee on Thursday, where she offered career advice and insight on being a woman engineer.  She also met with the College of Engineering Diversity Committee and two separate groups of faculty from UD ADVANCE. It was wonderful and inspiring having her here. 

Fall Coffee Break

Approximately fifty people attended the fall coffee break, which was co-sponsored by the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and held in Colburn Lab.

“Meet Your Faculty” Pizza Lunch: Dr. Julie Maresca and Dr. Rachel Davidson

Around twenty engineering graduate students and faculty gathered for the first-ever WIE “Meet Your Faculty” Pizza Lunch. Assistant Professor Julie and Maresca and Associate Professor Rachel Davidson, both from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, shared with students stories of their career paths and how they became professors. Lively discussion followed their brief presentations, including topics such as unintended bias against women in the workplace, strategies for countering inappropriate questions in job interviews, and a recent study on subtle gender bias in academia.

Pizza Welcome Lunch for New Women Graduate Students

We welcomed incoming women engineering graduate students with a pizza lunch in CCM 106 on September 7. Around 60 women graduate students, postdocs, and faculty enjoyed lunch and each other’s company. Abby Palmer, chair of the WIE Graduate Student Steering Committee, gave a brief presentation about the WIE graduate student program. Priscilla Moraes, co-chair, faciliated a fun game of Jeopardy with questions related to women in science and engineering.
