More than 45 undergraduate and graduate students at UD joined us for an informative and fun Career Panel! Questions from the audience ranged from what it’s like to take a career break to tips for lifelong success in your career. We would like to thank our panelists Dr. Tracey Jacksier, Dr. Beena Sukuraman, Joan Chinnery, Dr. Leah Konkol, and Jaclyn Cantler for their invaluable advice and conversation. Attendees had the opportunity to meet with the panelists afterward over coffee and treats.
Brown Bag: Implicit Bias

About 20 participants, including faculty, students and staff members at UD, participated in the ‘Implicit Bias’ Brown Bag event organized by WIE. Based on group discussions and interactive games, Dr. Bonistall and Dr. Doty taught attendees about diversity, privileged groups, and stereotypes. Attendees had the opportunity to discover by themselves how to recognize ‘implicit bias’ and what to do to handled it.

Dr. Judy Singer, Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Diversity and James Bryant Conant Professor of Education, Harvard University, gave a wonderful talk titled “Lessons Learned in Fostering Faculty Development and Diversity.” View Dr. Singer’s talk here. During her visit, Dr. Singer had dinner with senior women engineering faculty to discuss pathways to leadership.

More than 30 students and faculty joined Dr. Emily Day, assistant professor in Biomedical Engineering, and Dr. Stephanie Law, assistant professor in Materials Science and Engineering, for the first “Meet your Faculty” lunch of the year! Dr. Day and Dr. Law opened up the room for questions which ranged from how to prepare for an interview to work-life balance in your first years as a university professor. Brown Bag Lunch

We had a full room and great discussions at WIE’s “Brown Bag” event on “Talking from 9 to 5” (by Deborah Tannen)! Dr. Rachel Davidson lead the discussions on how men and women communicate with different styles at work and how these differences can influence perceptions of an individuals skills and abilities.
Pizza Welcome Lunch

About 100 women engineers gathered in the Perkins Student Center to welcome incoming College of Engineering graduate students, enjoy pizza, and learn more about the WIE program. WIE co-chairs Anagha Kulkarni and Theresa Ginley led our now-traditional, very competitive women in engineering trivia game. The room was full of energy during our most successful pizza lunch yet!
