WIE Outreach

Since 2017, UD Women in Engineering has partnered with Serviam Girls Academy to establish a tutoring program between UD graduate students and the students at Serviam.

Serviam Girls Academy is a local, tuition-free private middle school for girls in grades 5th through 8th in Wilmington, DE. Established in 2008, Serviam Girls Academy has served middle school girls from historically underserved communities in Delaware — providing high quality education to empower young women and prepare them for high school, and ultimately college.

About the program

The WiE volunteer tutoring program assists Serviam Girls Academy by pairing UD graduate student volunteers with 1-2 Serviam students for weekly tutoring sessions. Tutors meet with their student/s for 45-60 minutes each week at a predetermined time, throughout their school year..

Our tutors help their assigned student/s complete homework assignments, study for exams or quizzes, and assist with general study skills. Most of the tutors teach middle school level Math and Science with topics ranging from simple multiplication/division to pre-algebra. Tutors are not required or expected to prepare any teaching material in advance; students will arrive prepared to their tutoring session with the assignments they need help with.

Note: Typically, our tutors meet with their students in-person at Serviam Girls Academy, however currently due to COVID-19 all tutoring sessions are virtual via Zoom.

Tutoring Requirements

All tutors are required to submit the following materials, provided by Serviam Girls Academy:
Standards for Ethical and Behavioral Norms Form
$35 Background Check (reimbursable through WiE)
