SGA Official Statement

University of Delaware Community,

The StUDent Government Association unequivocally condemns domestic violence or violence in any form. As the liaison between administration and students, SGA stands firm in our role to advocate for a culture of consent, promotion of well-being, and denouncement of actions that compromises the integrity and safety of our community. We will continue to advocate for a focus on prevention and intervention towards a proactive societal understanding of sexual assault, abuse, and any form of violence.

We are devastated that these actions have taken place within the Newark community and acknowledge that this is just one instance of a much larger, more persistent problem. Our community is intended to be a place of safety, empowerment, and growth. We condemn those who have acted in a manner that is inconsistent with these values.

The StUDent Government Association calls upon the University of Delaware administration to acknowledge and condemn the actions of violence that occurred on Friday, October 8th.

The StUDent Government Association calls upon the Interfraternity Council, the Panhellenic Council, the Multicultural Greek Council, and the Special Interest Greek Council to work in partnership with SGA to proactively establish ways to support victims of gender-based violence and eliminate the culture of violence that exists within College life. Too often we overlook such incidents, and we cannot stand in silence any longer.

As we continue to foster an environment that is safe for all students at UD, we encourage students to be aware of the resources available:

Counseling Center, UDPD, Student Wellness and Health Promotion, Victim Advocacy Services, Office of Equity & Inclusion, Live Safe, Protesters’ Rights article, State of Delaware victim resources.

Sincerely,

The StUDent Government Association
