The GSG Hackathon on Misinformation and Cybersecurity

The Graduate Student Government at UD is organizing a virtual Hackathon this April. The goals of the Hackathon are to provide the participants with a platform to:

  1. Pitch their ideas.
  2. Learn new skills and improve presentation skills.
  3. Network with students from various backgrounds.
  4. Have fun developing and coding new tools.
  5. Improve their CV.
  6. Win prizes and build industry connections (depends on our sponsors).

The theme of the Hackathon will be “Misinformation and Cybersecurity” which can include (but not limited to) topics such as:

  1. Misinformation in health : Are masks / vaccines effective?
  2. Misinformation in finance : Detecting fake stock promotion articles.
  3. Misinformation in media : Verifying news source and fact checking.
  4. Cybersecurity : Protecting systems, networks, and programs from digital attacks.

When: The event will be held April 23rd through 25th, 2021.

Where: Zoom/Slack

Who: All graduate students are eligible to participate. Undergraduate students can participate conditionally (Please see rules and regulations).

All attendees and event staff are required to abide by our Rules and Regulations. For reporting, reach out to an organizer.

Friday (April 23)

Meet and Greet!
  • Meet the organizers and the other participants on Friday 5:00-5:30 PM. This meeting is optional, but it is a great opportunity to ask questions about how hackathons proceed, about the four tracks, and about any project ideas you might have.

Saturday (April 24)

Project description and Team assembly
  • Please join the event on time to hear all project pitches and assure you can work on the project that suits your interest and ability

FAQs

Are there any entry fees? Participation in the GSG Hackathon is completely free!

Is the event fully virtual? Do I have to stay online all the time? Yes, the event is fully virtual. You do not need to stay online all the time but you are expected to attend all briefing sessions and stay active on your team’s Slack channel (change if Gathertown).

I am an undergraduate student. Can I participate? Undergraduate students, especially seniors are encouraged to participate. However, your team must have at least one graduate student.

Can I talk to other participants during the hackathon? You can feel free to interact with other participants but be sure to have a healthy conversation and not to insult anyone. Keep in mind that this is still a competition. Do not engage in any activity that can be unfair to other participants.

Can I bring friends from other institutions? What about UD alumni? No, all participants MUST be currently enrolled students at the University of Delaware.

I don’t like my current team. Can I switch teams? No, once you are confirmed as a member of a participating team, you cannot switch to another team. Take your time before deciding to join a team.

How do I submit a project proposal ? Please use this template to propose a project and email the completed template directly to pmondal@udel.edu by midnight, Friday, April 23. It will be uploaded to GitHub repo and the sender will be added as a contributor.

Can I attend the workshop and/or presentations by companies even if I don’t participate in a Hackathon team project ? Yes, you can. However, you must register to get a Zoom link. We encourage you to participate though.
