Please remember to follow the rules of test security and final testing procedures.
Academic dishonesty (cheating) has been a serious problem at the ELI, and it is important that teachers do their best to make the students aware that there are very serious consequences for students who cheat.
In addition, teachers should do their best to remove temptations to cheat and minimize opportunities to cheat by following certain procedures.
1) Desk and table surfaces should be clear except for writing instruments. Look below the desks or tables to make sure that there are no open notebooks, scraps of paper, etc.
2) For final tests, cell phones should be collected and not returned until all the tests are accounted for. Cell phones should be turned off for all tests and quizzes.
3) Students should not leave the room during the tests.
4) Account for all paper-based tests before and after the administration of the tests.
5) If multiple sections of a class plan to use the same test form, make sure you do not review test items with your students before the other sections take the test.
6) NEVER review test items from final exams or tests that your mentor or coordinator has identified as secure. Do not return final tests to the students or allow the tests to leave the classroom.
7) The one-hour time limit for the final essay and the final reading exam is a strict limit. Teachers should not give their students any additional time to finish the test.
8) Students may not ask grammar, spelling or vocabulary questions during the final writing exam. The rubric for the final writing exams specifies how much help a teacher may give the student in explaining the task. For example, at the end of level one, oral explanation is expected, but by the end of level five, no oral explanation is allowed.
9) Report any cases of cheating to Dr. Stevens, Lowell Riethmuller and the Chair of the Testing Committee. A form for reporting academic dishonesty is in the faculty handbook.
10) Actively proctor your tests as you would a paper-based TOEFL test. Avoid the temptation to catch up on your grading.
Finally, when picking up your final reading exam envelope, remember to check the packet to ensure you have the correct number of test papers and scantron sheets. In the event that you need an extra exam or scantron sheet, please see your office coordinator or receptionist.
