Academic Support for New Faculty

The ELI has a number of colleagues here to support both new faculty and faculty who are new to specific courses as they adjust to their new academic demands. This support is designed to help your transition be less stressful and to ensure that we maintain standards of excellence in the teaching of all of our courses.Course mentor: a faculty member who has extensive experience teaching and, in many cases, developing your new course. This individual can help clarify the goals of the course, share materials, share exams, help you keep pace with the academic timeline, and answer questions you might have about the course.

Level Coordinator: a senior full time faculty member, whose responsibilities include:

  1. Providing all new teachers at their level a thorough orientation to that level’s LS and RW classes, syllabi, and curriculum.
  2. Meeting with the teachers from that level several times per session to address issues and clarify academic policies pertaining to the level.
  3. Reviewing teacher-generated tests to make sure they align with the learning outcomes
  4. Coordinating observations of all new level teachers with the faculty mentor, providing developmental support.
  5. Approving prompts for final essay exams
  6. Ensuring security for all final exams or any other exams used regularly across level sections
  7. Communicating with administration regarding issues and opportunities that arise
  8. Serving as liaison with the Curriculum and Textbook Committees regarding needs of Level

Faculty Mentor:
a senior full time faculty member whose responsibilities include:

  1. Keeping all new teachers informed of the responsibilities and deadlines they must meet over the course of the session;
  2. Explaining and clarifying institution and academic policies and procedures for new teachers;
  3. Answering questions new teachers might have; and
  4. Working with the ELI administration and Level Coordinators to ensure that all new faculty are observed and given feedback on their teaching.
