Gaining Credit for EAPVI in lieu of E110

In the beginning (some nineteen years ago when the English Department’s George Miller first agreed to grant the credit waiver based on ELI faculty member Ruth Jackson’s modeling her English for Academic Purposes Level VI class to conform to the core standards of E110), we would send a copy of the final graded research paper over to the English Department for review. Dr. Miller and his colleagues would essentially make the final decision based on the quality of the submission. After a few years, the English Department came to trust the ELI assessments (100 % of all of ELI submissions were approved by Dr. Miller, et al), and, for a long time Professor Jackson handled the credit process for students by sending a recommendation to the English Department, which worked with the Registrar’s Office to process the credit. George Miller and I reconstructed the policy a few years ago, and that policy appears on the EAPVI syllabus.

The procedures for awarding the credit and approving the exemption are described below:

1. Students are encouraged to indicate their desire for obtaining credit prior to leaving the ELI.

2. The CAP Coordinator, Laurie Fuhrmann, verifies with ELI records that the student has earned at least an “A-” in each of the three grades given (Reading, Writing, Grammar) in one session (80 hours) of English for Academic Purposes, Reading/Writing, Level VI, or a “B” in all three grades in two consecutive sessions of R/W EAP VI (160 hours).  In both instances, a student may not earn less than a B- in any given skill area.

3. After conferring with the instructor of record for EAPVI RW, Laurie writes letter to Dr. Michael McCamley, Department of English, requesting the exemption and including the students’ ELI transcript. Michael needs the student’s Student ID number and current address.

4. Michael contacts the Registrar’s Office to authorize the exemption and awarding of credit. He then notifies the student of the outcome.
