Securing Personal Nonpublic Information

The English Language Institute is committed to securing the personal, nonpublic information (PNPI) of our students, faculty, and staff. To this end, we have taken the following steps:

  1. storing all student and employee information on a secure, password protected University server;
  2. shredding appropriate documents with PNPI on a regular basis;
  3. moving toward removing social security numbers from grade reports and rosters;
  4. storing necessary documents containing PNPI in secure, locked file.

As a faculty member, there are important steps you can take to maintain your students’ security.

First, never include social security numbers when displaying student grades.

Second, check and purge your computer regularly for PNPI.

Third, make yourself aware of University policy concerning PNPI.

Please read the Protecting Personally Identifiable Information (PII) article on the IT website.

Your efforts to comply with University policies will help us succeed in preserving students’ private information.
