Update, December 20, 2021: Canvas has updated its timeline for New Quizzes. Classic Quizzes will be available for use through June, 2024. New Quizzes will still be available as a feature to enable in your course, and the Canvas@UD staff is working on its implementation schedule as Canvas is now allowing more local control of the implementation phases. Update, October 1, 2021: Canvas has updated its timeline for New Quizzes. Creation of Classic Quizzes will be prevented starting in July, 2022. Existing Classic Quizzes may be edited and taken by students through June, 2023. For more information, please see New Quizzes Timeline Overview.
Canvas has released New Quizzes, a quiz tool that will eventually replace the existing Canvas Quizzes tool (referred to as Classic Quizzes). New Quizzes has been in development for several years and has now been enabled to select as a course option for Canvas@UD, but the Classic Quizzes tool is still enabled and fully functional.
Canvas@UD administrators have enabled the New Quizzes course option to provide options to faculty who believe they would benefit from New Quizzes or to begin the migration process. We understand that this is a time when both stability and flexibility are necessary, so we want to stress that there is no need to make any immediate changes to your Canvas course if you wish to continue using the Classic Quizzes tool, and you will see no changes in your Canvas course unless you enable the New Quizzes course feature option. But Classic Quizzes is moving toward a planned deprecation.
New Quizzes is a completely different tool – it has many new features and questions types, but it does not support all of the same functions of Classic Quizzes. It also has a totally different look and feel from Classic Quizzes for both the teacher and the student. To learn more about how New Quizzes compares with Classic Quizzes, review the Features Comparison overview provided by Canvas. Given the differences, mixing quiz types within a Canvas course could cause confusion for students.
Enabling New Quizzes
If you would like to enable the New Quizzes in your course, you must enable the New Quizzes feature preview in course Settings. Click the Feature Previews tab.
Enable the New Quizzes option. The state icon should turn green and display a checkmark.
Once you enable the option, you will be prompted to select which quiz type to create when adding a new quiz:
To save your quiz engine selection for this course, check the “Remember my choice for this course” checkbox. To differentiate quizzes in your course, Classic Quizzes have an outlined icon of a rocket ship (
), whereas the icon for New Quizzes is a solid (filled in) rocket ship (
).
