As the LMS group prepared a promised 2022 Fall update about our transition plan, Canvas has again adjusted the timeline and eliminated the deadline for switching to New Quizzes in response to community feedback. Their updated goals are to facilitate a transition to New Quizzes when customers are ready and to continue to focus on New Quizzes feature development to create a tool that customers will want to use.

So what does this change do to the transition plan for Canvas@UD? Since the announcement was recent, we are still awaiting more discussion from Canvas to determine if there will be a deprecation timeline for Classic Quizzes in the future. If Canvas commits to maintaining both tools, we will monitor quiz tool usage and poll our faculty about how to proceed. But until we have a better understanding of their plans, the current optional use of New Quizzes will continue for Canvas@UD.

Supporting two tools is never easy, and the LMS group expects Canvas will probably remove Classic Quizzes from the interface at some time. The group will continue to monitor the feature development milestones and keep you informed of changes through monthly release notes. As long as Canvas continues to provide the same feature flags to implement a transition, the information below describes our tentative plan with dates to be announced as Canvas meets feature milestones:

Phase 1: Current

During this phase, New Quizzes is an optional feature in your course Settings. Once enabled, you will be able to create New Quizzes and migrate existing Classic Quizzes to the New Quizzes platform. During this time, instructors may choose to use New Quizzes in a course site based on their need and comfort level. It is also recommended that instructors who currently use Classic Quizzes to migrate a few quizzes for evaluation purposes to become familiar with the tool settings and interface. For more information, please see the Canvas@UD blog post, Canvas New Quizzes Available.

Phase 2: Starts when Fall 2023 Canvas course sites are created (TBA by Registrar’s Office, late July, 2023 – early August, 2023)

During this phase, two feature flags will be enabled *only the first option will be enabled with 23F course creation:

  • New Quizzes: Instructors will no longer need to opt-in to have New Quizzes available in a course. By enabling this feature for all courses, instructors will be required to select the type of quiz when creating a new quiz. The purpose of enabling this feature in all courses is to alert all quiz users a new quiz tool exists. New Quizzes use is not required.
  • New Quizzes Migration During Course Import/Copy: Instructors will be able to migrate Classic Quizzes content to New Quizzes when importing content. During this phase, the option box will not be selected by default, and instructors will need to enable the option to use it. The purpose for enabling this feature in all courses is to alert all quiz users a new quiz tool exists and a migration path during content copy exists. New Quizzes use is not required.

Phase 3: Dates TBA

During this phase, two feature flags will be enabled:

  • Default to New Quizzes: Instructors will not be able to create Classic Quizzes after this feature flag is enabled. Classic Quizzes can still be imported and delivered, but new Classic Quizzes cannot be created.
  • New Quizzes Migration Enabled by Default: Instructors will be able to migrate Classic Quizzes content to New Quizzes when importing content. This feature is similar to the New Quizzes Migration During Course Import/Copy feature flag from the previous phase, but the option will be enabled by default. The purpose of enabling this feature in all courses is to require instructors to actively remove the option to prevent Classic Quizzes migrating to New Quizzes during the content import. Doing so will focus the attention of Classic Quizzes users to the need to migrate to New Quizzes.

Phase 4: Dates TBA

During this phase, the final feature flag will be enabled:

  • New Quizzes Migration Required: Instructors will still not be able to create Classic Quizzes, and instructors will no longer have the option to disable the migration when importing content. This feature is similar to the New Quizzes Migration Enabled by Default feature flag from the previous phase, but the option will not be configurable. The purpose of enabling this feature to to ensure that all quizzes users have migrated to the New Quizzes tool and are actively engaging with the tool to review and edit their quizzes to avoid any last-minute migration challenges.
