As discussed in the February 23 edition of the Canvas@UD Newsletter, several Canvas external tool integrations are scheduled for LTI 1.1 to LTI 1.3 migration.  This version upgrade is recommended to meet the latest learning tools standards.  Core functionality and features provided by the vendor should not change, but if you rely on a tool planned for upgrade, you may wish to contact your vendor’s customer support representative for information regarding how the change may affect your workflow.

The LMS team intends to complete this process the week of December 18 through December 22.  This schedule coincides with the week between fall and winter terms to minimize the impact on Canvas users.  No tool will be changed until after grades are due on December 20.  You can expect all affected tools to be upgraded prior to the start winter term beginning January 3.  For a short time, both versions of the tool may be available to complete the term but to allow you to prepare your upcoming winter and spring course sites.  Please pay attention to the tool titles to ensure you are using the correct tool.

Depending on the vendor’s integration implementation, existing links to these tools in Canvas course sites may break after the update.  The link break will not affect the content in that external tool, and you should be able to visit the tool’s external environment directly if needed.  If you intend to continue using a tool in an existing site or copy a site with content linked to the LTI 1.1 integration to new course shells, you will likely need to relink or recreate that content linking to the new tool.  For example, external tool type assignments and module links will need to be relinked.

If you use any of the external tools listed below scheduled for migration in your courses, please review any steps you may need to take to ensure the tool works correctly in your course site starting Winter 2024.

McGraw Hill Connect (MH Campus Deep Integration (DI) in Canvas@UD course navigation)

The current LTI 1.1 integration for this tool is named MH Campus Deep Integration (DI).  It is being replaced with an LTI 1.3 tool named McGraw Hill Connect LTIA.  Both the LTI 1.1 and LTI 1.3 tools will be available starting the week of November 20, but the legacy LTI 1.1 tool will be removed at the end of December.  You should not enable both tools in your current course.  The LTI 1.3 tool is being activated early so that you can prepare your upcoming course sites.  Ensure that the LTI 1.1 tool is disabled and the new LTI 1.3 tool is enabled in your winter or spring site before you synchronize the site with the vendor environment.  Once the existing LTI 1.1 integration is removed, links to the tool in all existing Canvas course sites will no longer work. The content will still be available in the vendor environment, only the access from your Canvas course is being removed.  You must update your course sites to use the new tool starting in Winter 2024.  It is recommended that you delete any copied links in your winter or spring site and and relink using the new tool.

Please note:  The course integration workflow for the new tool is significantly different.  It is strongly recommended that you contact your vendor representative to ensure your course is set up properly.  For more information about configuring the new tool, please visit the McGraw Hill websites, Upgrade Your Canvas Course to LTI Advantage and Reuse Your Course with Canvas, or this guide, Canvas LTI Advantage Integration – Instructor Workflow – New Connect Experience.  The tool also provides a course navigation menu item which vendor guides reference as McGraw Hill Connect, but it is locally named MH Connect for vendor naming consistency for Canvas@UD.  The McGraw Hill Connect LTIA tool available in Modules and the MH Connect menu navigation item are the same tool.

McGraw Hill SimNet (Business and Economics courses only)

The current LTI 1.1 integration for this tool, McGraw-Hill SimNet, is only available to courses in the Lerner College of Business and Economics.  It is being replaced with an LTI 1.3 tool named McGraw Hill SIMnet LTIA.

Once the existing LTI integration is removed, links to the tool in all existing Canvas course sites will no longer work.  The content will still be available in the vendor environment, only the access from your Canvas course is being removed.  You must update your course sites to use the new tool starting in Winter 2024.  It is recommended that you delete any copied links in your winter or spring site and and relink using the new tool.
