As discussed in the February 23 edition of the Canvas@UD Newsletter, several Canvas external tool integrations are scheduled for LTI 1.1 to LTI 1.3 migration. This version upgrade is recommended to meet the latest learning tools standards. Core functionality and features provided by the vendor should not change, but if you rely on a tool planned for upgrade, you may wish to contact your vendor’s customer support representative for information regarding how the change may affect your workflow.
The LMS group intends to complete this process the week of May 29 through June 2. This schedule coincides with the week between spring and summer terms to minimize the impact on Canvas users. No tool will be changed until after grades are due on May 30. You can expect all affected tools to be upgraded prior to the start summer term beginning June 5.
Depending on the vendor’s integration implementation, existing links to these tools in Canvas course sites may break after the update. The link break will not affect the content in that external tool, and you should be able to visit the tool’s external environment directly if needed. If you intend to continue using a tool in an existing site or copy a site with content linked to the LTI 1.1 integration to new course shells, you will likely need to relink or recreate that content linking to the new tool. For example, external tool type assignments and module links will need to be relinked.
If you use any of the external tools listed below scheduled for migration in your courses, please review any steps you may need to take to ensure the tool works correctly in your course site.
Perusall
Once the existing LTI integration is removed, links to the tool in all existing Canvas course sites will no longer work. If you intend to continue to use Perusall links in a course site, you must relink using the new tool. Please see the Perusall support webpages, What’s the difference between 1.1 & 1.3?, for a comparison of the implementations and Canvas LTI 1.3 Instructor Setup for an overview. For Perusall usage information, see the ATS guide, Using Perusall in Canvas, or visit the Perusall support website. Perusall support states users who initially created their Perusall account through an LTI 1.1 integration will receive a one time confirmation email the first time they launch Perusall through an LTI 1.3 integration.
You will no longer need to add the Perusall tool through Settings -> Apps. The tool will be disabled by default in all course sites and can be activated in Settings -> Navigation.
FlatWorld Homework
Once the existing LTI integration is removed, links to the tool in all existing Canvas course sites will no longer work. If you intend to continue to use FlatWorld links in a course site, you must relink using the new tool. For FlatWorld support, please visit the FlatWorld Homework – Instructor Guides or contact your vendor representative.
McGraw Hill ALEKS
Once the existing LTI integration is removed, links to the tool in all existing Canvas course sites will no longer work. If you intend to continue to use ALEKS links in a course site, you must relink using the new tool. For ALEKS support, please visit the ALEKS Instructor Support Guides or contact your vendor representative.
Vista Higher Learning
Once the existing LTI integration is removed, links to the tool in all existing Canvas course sites will no longer work. If you intend to continue to use Vista Higher Learning links in a course site, you must relink using the new tool. Please visit the Vista Higher Learning website for support or contact your vendor representative.
Anthology Ally
Ally is Integrated into all Canvas courses to help instructors make content that is more accessible. There are no changes needed for instructors.
If you have questions about these changes, please contact the LMS group at canvas-info@udel.edu.
