New UDARI Legacies site – with student research – now live!

Dear friends and colleagues:
I am pleased to announce that the new, public-facing website for the UDARI Legacies of Dispossession and Enslavement at UD committee is now live! https://sites.udel.edu/udari-legacies/
The site’s current feature is a suite of original blog posts authored by students from HIST 460/660: Race and Inequality in Delaware (Fall 2021). Building on the students’ Scholar in the Library presentation last December, these deeper dives include investigations into:
- Black property-ownership in antebellum Newark
- Local landowners’ strategies for exploiting Black labor
- Trustee Rathmell Wilson’s ties to human bondage
- The influence of politics on student debates on slavery
…and much, much more!
This work represents some of the first fruits of UD’s membership in the Universities Studying Slavery consortium, as well as the first wave of resources we hope to host on the Legacies site. Check back soon for new materials engaging the history and legacies of racial injustice and inequality at UD.
This site was made possible through a UD Anti-Racism Initiative committee grant. Special thanks to Gretchen Von Koenig for serving as designer and lead editor, and to the HIST 460/660 students for dedicating their time to sharing this important research beyond the classroom.
Sincerely,
Dael Norwood
Co-chair, Legacies Committee
