       Where is Delaware?

Delaware is a state located in the United States of America.  It is located on the the East Coast, and its capital city is Dover. In terms of its distance to the Rivera’s native Mexico, Delaware is located approximately 1,958 miles away.  Some major cities close to Delaware include Philadelphia, PA , New York, NY , and Washington D.C. In the summer the average temperature is 80 degrees, while in the winter the average temperature is 56 degrees. Like Arturo, many new immigrants in Delaware work in factories on farms in nearby Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Pennsylvania Mushroom Farm

  • Location of Arturo’s job.
  • These farms are known for their brutal conditions and long work hours, as Arturo experienced in the novel.
  • Recently, these farms have faced large drops in production since they have lost a great number of their workers because due to the Trump administration’s immigration policy. The vast majority of workers are immigrants. Many workers have been deported, and many have left due to fears of deportation.

  • Church that Alma visits when she is first exploring Newark and getting acquainted to her new neighborhood. The church helps in giving her a small sense of home.

  • Location where Alma takes English classes.
  • This is far for Alma, since it is located in Wilmington (Alma must take a bus).
  • Center provides many services/classes for immigrants.
  • Helps with job and housing searches.
