Girl In Translation

Summary

When Kimberly Chang and her mother emigrate from Hong Kong to Brooklyn in the 1980’s, she quickly begins a secret double life: an exceptional student by day, and a Chinatown factory worker by night. Told in Kimberly’s perspective, the story shows how hiding the more difficult truths of her life such as poverty, pressures of her future, or her secret love for a factory boy weighs her down. Kimberly learns to constantly translate not just her language but herself back and forth between the two different worlds she is living in.
