Building Bridges with Hope Center
Engineers Without Borders at UD has started a partnership with the New Castle County Hope Center, which provides housing for families and individuals displaced by COVID 19. ReachOut has created this partnership to provide the resident families with fun and educational activities.
For our first trip, we held a bridge building class and competition. We showed the families examples of a few popsicle stick bridges EWB members had made in our general body meeting and then helped each make their own. After all the gluing and building was done we put the bridges to the test! We were able to use UD Engineering K-12’s shaker tables to simulate earthquakes and weights to load the top of the bridges. All the bridges held up, so the kids were able to walk away from the event with their bridges. It was a huge success, and we’re excited for our next trip to the Hope Center!
