If you have transitioned to Canvas New Quizzes from Classic Quizzes, you may have noticed that the two tools approach students’ view of quiz results differently. For Classic Quizzes, instructors need to allow students to view their submission and details. Conversely, New Quizzes displays the submission and all details to students by default, and instructors may need to restrict viewing details.
With such a significant change in workflow, we want to make sure instructors are aware how options affect students’ viewing their New Quizzes quiz results. Below are some important notes about students’ view of their submission, quiz grade, and comments.
- Posting quiz grades in your gradebook and the “Hide results from students” settings on the quiz’s settings page are entirely independent of each other. To completely hide grades from students, you must hide results from students the quiz settings and set a manual posting policy in the gradebook for the quiz before students take the quiz.
- The quiz settings control what students can see after they have submitted their quiz attempt. These settings include the ability to “Show points awarded” (i.e., the students’ grades). This view of their grade is visible to them even if you have hidden the grades in the gradebook.
- The option “Show item feedback” shows the feedback that you have added to quiz questions and also the student-specific comments that you may have added when grading a submission in the SpeedGrader. It does not show comments entered on the SpeedGrader right sidebar. Those comments are visible to students only when grades have been posted.
- If you enable the “Hide results from students” option and do not check the boxes for any show option, then students will not be able to view any information by accessing the quiz after they submit. If however, you have your gradebook set to automatically post grades for the quiz then they will see their score but they will not be able to see any of the questions or any other feedback.
- Enabling “Hide results from students” and checking all of the available option boxes produces the same result that you would get if you did not enable “Hide results from students” at all.
- The “Hide results from students” option can be manually reconfigured any time after student submissions have been made. If you are unsure how the students will view their submission based on show option dates, you can also manually enable and disable the options to control viewing.
- This is not specific to New Quizzes, it is true for all assignment types, but it has been a source of some confusion when posting grades when using a manual posting policy. When posting grades, selecting to post to “Everyone” instead of “Graded” effectively turns off the manual grading policy for that assignment going forward.
