A Canvas production update will occur on Saturday, July 19. 2025. Check out the full release notes. Production updates occur on third Saturday of each month, and the next planned update is Saturday, August 16, 2025. Updates in the current release include:
Redesigned Files Tool
The Files page interface has been redesigned to simplify file organization and management. A temporary button allows users to switch between the new and original interface until enforcement. Your preference is retained across login and logout sessions.
To select all files and folders at once, click the Select All checkbox [1]. To select files or folders individually, use the checkbox next to each file or folder[2]. Column headers can be clicked to sort files and folders [3]. To switch between the new and original Files page, click the Switch to Old/New Files Page button [4]. To view the files landing page, click the All My Files button [5]. Bulk action options are available when files and/or folders are selected [6]. The new interface also includes pagination for large file lists.

Manage Threaded Replies in Legacy Type Discussions
The Discussions Redesign update in summer 2024 included an option to disallow threaded replies. When enabled, students would not be able to reply to other students’ posts within a discussion. The update may have affected some existing discussions due to differences in managing redesigned and legacy discussions. As a result, Canvas may have automatically enabled the “Disallow Threaded Replies” setting to existing discussions. To help resolve this issue in a course, Canvas added the temporary button below for users to bulk-enable threaded replies in all discussions in a course by unchecking the ‘Disallow Threaded Replies’.
This release replaces the button with a banner displaying a Manage Discussions button to allow instructors to enable or disable threaded replies in bulk. Please note, the banner only displays if the course contains at least one legacy type discussion.
To bulk edit all discussions, click the Select All checkbox, then select the Set to Threaded or Set to Not threaded replies button. To edit the preference for individual discussions, adjust the threaded option using the drop-down menu associated with the discussion.
This update saves instructors time by allowing them to manage threaded replies across all discussions at once, while still offering the option to adjust settings individually as needed. If you are seeing the banner in your Canvas course, please make these adjustments to resolve any settings issues.
New Quizzes – Quiz Log Updates
Instructors can enable a new New Quizzes option, “Detect Multiple Sessions”, to inform students that instructors can view browser information when students access the quiz from multiple devices or browsers.
When enabled, a student who resumes a quiz in a browser session different from the one where they started will receive a notification.
All multi-session activity is recorded and can be viewed in the quiz log on the Moderate page using the browser session ID.
