The Gradescope pilot has been extended through spring 2025 and is available to all instructors. Gradescope is a platform for assignment and exam submission, grading, and analytics. It integrates with Canvas to facilitate the grading of hand-written assignments including tests, homework and coding assignments. If you have used Gradescope this term, expect an e-mail regarding the Gradescope Faculty Feedback Fall 2024 Survey in the upcoming weeks. Instructors and students are important partners in a pilot – your feedback is essential to the evaluation process! Thank you to all users who currently participate in the pilot. We appreciate your taking the time to learn and support a new tool!
Initially, the Gradescope pilot focused on grading paper-based and programming assignments, but the tool also has the capability to score exam bubble sheets. This fall and spring, the pilot is seeking instructors willing to try Gradescope Bubble Sheets instead of Scantron services to help us evaluate the process and provide valuable feedback. Please note that Scantron services are still available if preferred. Gradescope Bubble Sheets allows instructors to:
- Create and revise digital multiple-choice answer keys.
- Scan and upload students’ completed paper bubble sheets.
- Automatically grade exams similar to Scantron on your own.
Since Gradescope integrates directly with Canvas, grades can be easily posted without manually entering or importing them. The tool provides a bubble sheet template for up to 200 questions across five exam versions in a single assignment. For more information about Gradescope Bubble Sheets, please refer to the following resources:
If you are interested in participating in this evaluation, please e-mail canvas-info@udel.edu. Our team will assist you throughout the process—from setting up Gradescope before the exam to uploading and scoring the scans afterward.
As the pilot approaches the end of the fall term, data indicates usage is expanding. As of mid-October, 45 active Gradescope courses have both student enrollment and assignments, and the 266 Gradescope assignments created to date slightly exceeds the total number of assignments from 2024 Spring.
The distribution of use across departments is also changing. When comparing assignments by department to previous terms, usage is growing in the engineering and math departments.
We still need your help! Broad use and growth will help support university-wide adoption at the end of the pilot. Please consider its use for paper-based assignment or bubble sheets. If you are concerned about the scanning process, students can use the Gradescope mobile app to scan submissions using Single Sign-On capability. Students may select the University of Delaware from Gradescope’s school list to enter UD credentials to submit work for a course you have synchronized with Canvas.
Where to go for help? We are learning too! Please e-mail canvas-info@udel.edu so that help can work through an issue with you. But if you need more immediate assistance, use the Gradescope Help Center to find information and answers to frequently asked questions. If you have a specific question, Gradescope support can also help with any problems or questions you may have. Check the Canvas calendar for upcoming introductory workshops to help get started.
