A Canvas production update will occur on Saturday, June 15, 2024.  Check out the full release notes.  Production updates occur on third Saturday of each month, and the next planned update is Saturday, July 20, 2024.  Updates in the current release include:

SpeedGrader – Media Comment Screen Capture and Auto Captioning
In SpeedGrader, the media recorder available in the right sidebar for comments now has screen capture and captioning capability to enhance the clarity of instructor feedback by allowing annotating a student submission and recording simultaneously.  The record icon has been replaced with an updated icon.

By default, screen capture is not enabled when recording.  To add screen capture to your recording, click the Screen Capture drop-down and selected Enabled.  Captioning is auto-enabled for voiceovers.  Please note, closed captions may require some time to process and appear.  Once Screen Capture is enabled, instructors can select to share a specific browser tab, specific window or their entire screen.

Please note, Canvas specifies screen capture and captioning features for media comments are only available in SpeedGrader when using Chrome and Edge browsers.  The mobile app is not supported.  For more information, please view the feature video:

New Quizzes – Export Using Common Cartridge
New Quizzes are included in Common Cartridge exports (.imscc files) and Course Content export files allowing the import of existing quizzes to New Quizzes.  This capability is separate from the export feature with New Quizzes that allows a user to export a quiz as a QTI file.

SpeedGrader – Update to Student Sort List (May 22 and June 5 deploy)
In the SpeedGrader settings, the sort list now include “randomize students” and “randomize students with submission status” options  to improve prevention of grading fatigue and biases when grading students.

For more information about sorting options, please see the Canvas guide, How do I sort the student list in SpeedGrader?
