All of us have a responsibility to make the University’s digital content accessible to everyone. Through conscientious design and collaboration, together we can ensure that our students, faculty, staff and other community members are welcomed at our institution and equipped to succeed.
Did you know?
- Approximately 19% of college students have a disability.
- Only one-third of those students will disclose their disability to their higher education institution.
- Approximately 10% of UD students utilize support from Disability Support Services (DSS).
- There are many students in addition to those registered with DSS who could benefit from accessible materials.
Join us this summer for not one, but two 10-day accessibility challenges. Following the positive results of the basic 10-Day Accessibility Challenge, participant feedback highlighted the need for an advanced course that focuses on developing accessible digital content using Word documents and PDFs.
First up is the basic 10-Day Accessibility Challenge which will run June 17th through June 28th. This asynchronous online course will help you learn simple ways to make your course(s) accessible in Canvas such as heading structure; unordered and ordered lists, meaningful links, alternate text and complex images, color contrast and accessible audio. Each day you will learn about one task through a short 2-3 minute video to help guide you in making your materials accessible. Please register here for the basic challenge.
Next up, if you are looking for ways to make your digital content in word or PDFs more accessible, join us for the 10-Day Advanced Accessibility Challenge that will run July 15th through July 26th. This online asynchronouse course will take you through the process to create accessible digital content using word documents and PDFs for your Canvas course(s). Some of the topics covered will be how to properly structure those documents, make visual content accessible with alternative text and color contrast, and create accessible tables and PDFs. Like the basic 10-Day Challenge, each day will bring one or two tasks through a short read and a 2-3 minute video that will assist in making your word documents and PDFs more accessible. Please register here for the advanced challenge.
