A Canvas production update will occur on Saturday, April 20, 2024. Check out the full release notes.  Production updates occur on third Saturday of each month, and the next planned update is Saturday, May 18, 2024.  Updates in the current release include:

Course Grading Scheme – Archive Feature and Interface Update
The course grading schemes interface is redesigned, and instructors can now archive grading schemes as well as edit the name and description of grading schemes currently in use.  Archiving a grading scheme may be necessary if you have graded with the scheme but would like to restrict its future use.  Archived grading schemes can be re-activate at any time.  To learn more about course grading schemes, please see the Canvas guide, How do I use grading schemes in a course?

Under the course Settings Grading Scheme option, View, Copy, and Add New Grading Scheme buttons have been added.  Use these buttons to view the grading scheme selected, make a copy of the grading scheme selected, or to create a new grading scheme.

The Manage All Grading Schemes interface has also been redesigned to introduce the new ability to archive grading schemes.   The interface is divided into three sections – the Canvas default grading scheme which can only be viewed and not edited, your active grading schemes, and your archived grading schemes.

In this new interface, users can create a new grading scheme, or duplicate, edit, archive active schemes, restore archived schemes or delete an existing scheme using the tools displayed for each grading scheme.  Editing the name and description of grading schemes currently in use does not allow edits to percentages or points in the grading scheme.  For more information, please review the feature release video:

Notes:

  • A grading scheme in use can be archived and then restored to an active state.
  • An archived grading scheme cannot be leveraged in the future by a course or assignment unless the scheme is restored.
  • The default Canvas grading scheme cannot be archived.
  • When copying or exporting a course, archived default grading schemes are not copied or exported.

New Quizzes – Item Analysis for Additional Question Types
This update to the Item Analysis Report provides additional question types and data for instructors to evaluate student responses.  The following data is now added to the Item Analysis report:

  • Essay and File Upload:  Score distribution chart, CSV support
  • Numeric:  Answer Frequency Summary, Aggregation and CSV support

For more information about the statistical data available for New Quizzes, please see the Canvas guide, How do I view reports for a quiz in New Quizzes?

New Quizzes – Display Score Toggle on Moderate Page
An icon has been added to the Score column of the New Quizzes Moderate page to allow instructors to toggle displayed scores between percentages and raw points.  To switch, click the Configure icon.

Canvas has also announced an update to the Canvas Ideas & Themes voting process introduced this time last year to gather community feedback and to prioritize ideas and changes.  The next round of voting, planned for April, 2024, has been paused as Canvas reevaluates the process to determine what is working and what is not.  Read more about the reasons and the next steps in the process in the Canvas Community blog post, We made a mistake in Ideas & Themes decisions.   You can always find information about currently planned changes using the Canvas Product Roadmap.

For more information, browse the Canvas Release Notes to find updated features or bug fixes that apply to you based on your Canvas usage.  If you have any questions about the changes or about how to use Canvas effectively, IT-Academic Technology Services staff is always available at the IT-ATS Welcome Bar or you can send your questions to canvas-info@udel.edu.
