A Canvas production update will occur on Saturday, September 16, 2023. Check out the full release notes.  Production updates occur on third Saturday of each month, and the next planned update is Saturday, October 21, 2023.  Updates in the current release include:

Gradebook – Points-Based Grading Scheme
The Canvas gradebook now offers a point-based grading scheme which can be out of any number (i.e., 0-4 or 0-10), and has the same base requirements as a percentage-based grading scheme.  The default points are 0-4.  This new grading scheme provides an additional option for more flexible grading styles.

For more information about grading schemes, please see the Canvas guide, How do I use grading schemes in a course?

New Quizzes Updates
Several improvements have been implemented in this release:

  • Improved Item Analysis Report:  Instructors can now access Item Analysis reports in a more timely manner using a new on-demand generation tool available on the Reports tab.

Updates to the user interface, including format changes and tooltips, have also been added to improve instructor workflow.  For more information about quiz reports, please see the Canvas guides, How do I view reports for a quiz in New Quizzes? and the New Quizzes Quiz and Item Analysis resource document.

  • Build on Last Attempt:  Multiple-attempt quizzes now provide the option to allow students to build on their last attempt of a quiz by reattempting incorrectly answered questions.  When enabled, students can only view questions marked with incorrect answers, all other questions are hidden.  Students can reattempt incorrectly answered questions until the answer is marked correct in SpeedGrader or they run out of attempts.  Students who get all questions correct will not have the option to reattempt.

For more information on this feature, please review the release screencast:

  • Quiz QTI File Export:  Similar to Classic Quizzes, instructors can now export New Quizzes from the Build page and the new Export Page to store and share quiz content.

When a question from an item bank is used and then a QTI export is created, the item bank is included in the export.

Support for iWork File Conversion in DocViewer (August 30 deploy)
This update allows students to submit iWork files (.pages, .numbers, and .key) so that instructors can view and annotate the files in SpeedGrader.  Uploaded files can also be previewed in DocViewer when the files are linked in content.  Please note, this capability is available for files uploaded after August 30, 2023; previously-submitted files will need to be re-uploaded to enable the preview.
