In the coming months we will provide you tips to help you design and create courses that are accessible to all users. This month we are featuring the Accessibility Checker in the Rich Content Editor.
The Accessibility Checker was added just this past fall by Canvas to its Rich Content Editor. The tool enables faculty who design course content in Canvas to consider various accessibility attributes and check for common errors that could occur. It is located on the toolbar.
When you click the icon the tool scans the content and makes known any issue detected. If no issues are found you will receive a message: “No accessibility issues were detected.”
If one or more issues are detected, the accessibility attribute is listed along with an explanation of the error and how to fix it. Information is also provided to learn more about this particular accessibility attribute when you click on the question mark icon. There are previous and next buttons to view any other issues identified.
The Canvas Help page listed below will help you learn more about this tool and the various accessibility attributes it will detect. Remember, it is everyone’s responsibility to meet the standards for accessibility on campus. Using the Accessibility Checker on a regular basis will help anyone creating online course content facilitate this responsibility.
