This past Wednesday, members of ASME UD gathered to express their nerdy love of all things Pi. On the evening of March 14th–Pi Day–they gathered in the Spencer Lab Matrix (Room 133b) and began to program Raspberry Pis and bake apple cranberry pie crisps. Truly, it was a well-rounded evening.
For the pie bakery, everyone pitched in to help fashion the apple pie crisps. It took us a few tries of iterating the recipe by adding water, additional fruit, and filling to arrive at our final pie, but everyone agreed they were glad once we did. The small ceramic crocks we used were just the right size for this highly iterative process; once we finished eating the first batch of pies, everyone clamored for more.
Though there were several bumps in the road to making this event happen, we weathered the multiple strikes of Murphy’s Law and soldiered on just the same. This year we thankfully had five functioning Raspberry Pi workstations (up from one), and had engineers happily coding away despite a last minute change of venue. Participants were able to learn to use the Linux terminal interface, and light up an LED.
Thank you to everyone who came out to make this event happen! Also, a special shout out to Liz Racca for running the Raspberry Pi workshop. Everyone that came had a blast programming and baking pies, and hopefully we will see you at next year’s event.
