Tiny Hueman: Philly’s Newest Alt Rock Powerhouse

For Philly-based five piece Tiny Hueman,
2017 has been a busy year. This year alone, the band fully solidified their lineup, released their first EP, Shallow, and played shows from Philadelphia to New York, including the first annual Philly Music Fest at the World Cafe Live this past September.

On November 24, Tiny Hueman released their sophomore EP, Drift, through New Noise Magazine. Experimenting with texture, instrumentation, and rhythm, Tiny Hueman successfully combines the brightness of indie rock with heavy alternative sounds. Dustin Miller and Vinny Vaccaro’s dynamic guitar riffs effortlessly blend with the driving rhythms of drummer Kevin Miller and bassist Josh Halberstadt, all rounded out by Richie Hollahan’s melodic and powerful vocal lines. Drift is an impressive work that establishes Tiny Hueman’s endurance in a densely packed Philadelphia music scene — just ask Circa Survive frontman Anthony Green.

Days before the release, Tiny Hueman stopped by The Music Room to perform in the WVUD lounge and talk with Liz about the new EP, their inspirations, and their collaboration and growth as a band.

Darts, Dire Straits, and The Voice: Rebecca Loebe

This week on The Music Room, we spoke with Texas singer and songwriter Rebecca Loebe about her newest album, “Blink.” Rebecca was inspired by mix tapes and, oddly enough, the IRS while writing the album. Regarding mix tapes, Rebecca told us about how powerful she thinks songs can be, and that their ability to transport us to different periods of time in our lives. With the IRS, Rebecca discussed how distracting herself from  preparing for an audit motivated her to write many tracks on “Blink.”

Aside from the album, Rebecca also briefly discussed her time on NBC’s first season of The Voice. During the blind audition, her cover of “Come As You Are” landed her a spot on Adam Levine’s team. Although Rebecca did not win, her audition song remained one of the top-selling singles of that season and gained iTunes popularity worldwide.

About Our Guest

Rebecca Loebe is a Texas native singer and songwriter. Her music contains elements of pop, country, and swing. Rebecca graduated high school at the age of 16, and became the second youngest person in her class at Berklee College of Music. She graduated with a degree in audio engineering, but her passion was always performing. By only using five different instruments on her new album “Blink,” Rebecca wanted to see “what different pictures she could paint with the same five colors.” “Blink” was released on Feb. 3rd, 2017.

Laura Cortese: Fiddling everywhere

150930_0Mandorichard had a great time chatting with singer, songwriter, and fiddler Laura Cortese, on Sept. 6, 2016. Laura studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and has since submerged herself in the city’s indie music scene. Her vocals and fiddle have been notably featured on numerous albums, but her most recent work, All In Always, is something she is incredibly proud of. She explains to Mandorichard how she was inspired by other artists and their shared appetite for melody–no matter what country they live in. Laura loves being drawn-in instrumentally by other artists and these moments of inspiration lead to some amazing cross-cultural collaboration on her album.

It was interesting to hear Laura talk about her previous works, her initial desire to be a performer, and her hopes for the future. Right now she is running a “pledge music” campaign with her band “Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards” so that fans can contribute to and be a part of the making of their upcoming album.
